Background

The black opal was the focus of my business in Lightning Ridge having learnt the industry as a trade and from a business perspective.

More recently, I have worked in an academic institution where I have concentrated on maintaining PC systems and on accessing and retrieving online information and computerised library catalogues. An important aspect of my promoting computer efficiency and literacy amongst staff has been to train people on the use of electronic and automated systems.

I have had to assess software applications and system requirements, to select suitable combinations and to implement acceptable solutions.

Interests

Of my many interests, music (especially electronic music) has fascinated me since my high school days and, for a while, played in bands. Because there was no one else capable of maintaining electronic equipment in the Ridge, I developed the skill in doing so myself and this, in turn, provided a window of opportunity to learn about computer systems and software.

I developed a complementary interest in networked information and programming in C++ - much to the detriment of my music, particularly after a customised sound library that represented several years of composing was placed beyond my reach.

Given that my interests are diverse, it might not be surprising to know that, besides literature and the arts, they include herpetology.

Experience

Out of my business and employment, I have learnt the valuable lesson of self reliance and sufficiency. Furthermore, I acquired experience in customer service, running a business, computer software and hardware, the Internet in an academic environment and in training as an accredited trainer under the Australian National Competency Based Training Standard.
