The New Jerusalem Bible; Reader's Edition

Edited by Henry Wansbrough
A major publishing event, the popular New Jerusalem Bible is now available in a concise readers edition. Contains the complete and unabridged biblical text, has 700 fewer pages than the original, and offers concise tabular introductions to each Book.
"In 1956, scholars from L'Ecole Biblique in Jerusalem set their minds to translating the Scriptures from the original Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek texts, hoping they could preserve the most sacred Christian traditions and stories. By 1966, the first English-language Jerusalem Bible was published. Since then it has become a favored text for lay readers and scholars alike. The accessible language and richly recounted stories, poetry, and letters in this edition is consistent with previous versions. However, this latest version stands out because of its clear format--clean double columns with easy-to-read type and quick reference headings." Amazon.com.

"Good Devotional and Reference. Finally, A True Interlinear. Firstly, this book is one of the more affordable and one of the few true interlinears. Many interlinear Bibles available, especially the Hebrew-English Old Testament interlinears, are either too expensive and, perhaps too scholarly for the ambitious layman, or else missing the Hebrew language that you might expect from an interlinear! Of course, you can look up Strong's numbers, but you might as well get a lexicon if you want to study the meaning of words, in depth. I have always wanted to read both the original manuscripts in printed form in the original syntax, grammar, and alphabet, even though that doesn't guarantee that I would understand everything better. This book has a good general sketch of Hebrew pronouns, grammar, pronunciation, history, and textual history; but it has no concordance, index, or appendix, and it has no deep explanation of precise semantics. This interlinear has a main text area on each page that displays the Hebrew text and its literal English. The margins contain the NIV Bible in small print. The footnotes explain variations in spelling, wording, and pronunciation compared to other texts. (This book uses the Masoretic Texts based almost entirely on the oldest text, Biblia Hebraica.)" A reader from SAN FRANCISCO, CA USA.
"Jewish review of Zondervan Interlinear OT. As a Jew who is happy to be Jewish -- not a Messianic Jew -- I think that this is a terrific book. I am a graduate of the Baltimore Hebrew College High School department, studied at the Hebrew University for college third year in Jerusalem and speak Hebrew fluently. This interlinear OT is great for anyone who wants to learn Hebrew or brush up on Hebrew. As with the Zondervan Interlinear NT by Berry, the print is very clear. Unfortunately, there is no Hebrew dictionary at the end of the OT as there is a Greek one at the end of the Interlinear NT. It would be more convenient to have a Hebrew dictionary at the end to obviate the need for a separate dictionary by the side. Of course, this interlinear OT is so large, adding a dictionary might not be practical. The only objection I have is one that Kohlenberger has himself alluded to in his introduction. That is, the interlinear translation of the Hebrew word "almah" as "virgin" instead of "young girl." As Kohlenberger says, it should be "young girl" just as YHWH should be "God" and not "Jehovah." This will collide with Christian theology and I understand that Zondervan is a Christian publishing company. However, even Kohlenberger says that it should be translated "young girl." This is simply a fact. I want to congratulate Zondervan on a great product. I must say however that the publisher's description is confusing. Zondervan states that "specific" words are translated in the interlinear format. As the 2 excellent reviews above indicate, every word is given the interlinear treatment. I do not understand why Zondervan does not make this clear in their promotional material. One final word. I live in the Jewish community of Baltimore. I checked with 3 different Hebrew book stores in town. Apparently there are no equivalents from Hebrew publishing companies to the interlinear format. In fact, no one in any of these stores knew what I was talking about. Maybe one day Soncino Press and other Jewish publishing companies will catch up to Zondervan. Three cheers for a job well done. Shalom." Alan Tischler from Baltimore, Maryland, United States.
"One of the things I would grab during a fire if I could... I love my Hebrew English Interlinear. First, I've learned so many Hebrew words this way. It's such an enjoyable way to read theBible.. and my vocabulary grows each time. Second, I love the way that Hebrew sounds and how passionate a language it is. In English, when Moses is praying for Miriam, it reads, "Heal her, O God." But in Hebrew, the text says, "O God! Heal now to her!" The text is more immediate, more emotional. Third, I love being able to read the Bible in the original language as a layperson for myself. Now when people say, "Well, in the original language it doesn't really say that!" I can look it up and see, yes, it does say "ben" or "son" in Psalm 2, etc. The Hebrew is on top in nice large letters; the English is underneath word for word... and the NIV text is along the side. It's heavy... (kvod...weighty/full of glory)... and worth every shekel. :) For me, reading this Bible is a closer way of listening to God face to face...like Moses experienced in Exodus 33... an intimate way of listening to God, my joy and my delight." Pam Carnie from Houston.
"The best Hebrew English Interlinear Old Testament available. Seminary students know that their classroom knowledge of the biblical languages (Hebrew/Greek) is probably the first thing to disappear from their minds after seminary. And no doubt, the Hebrew language will disappear sooner than the Greek because most seminary students do refer to their Greek more often than Hebrew after seminary graduation. Fortunately, Kohlenberger's Interlinear Old Testament is handy (in one volume), complete (has all 39 books of the OT), and is readable (has larger print than most), and this Interlinear Old Testament should be on the shelf of serious students who know Hebrew or who have previously studied Hebrew. No other volume in print has all the above features of the complete Hebrew text along with a word for word English translation underneath each Hebrew word in the Old Testament text. This volume will save one a lot of time in looking up the underlying Hebrew meaning behind an English translation. So if one is going to continue on with their Hebrew in the ministry after seminary, this book is the way to go. One will find this volume very useful and efficient in helping to accurately pinpoint the underlying Hebrew of an English translation of the Old Testament." A reader from Phoenix, Arizona.

"Good Bible. A good parallel bible which presents us with 4 scholarly translations, as well as the protestant/orthodox/catholic accepted books of the Bible. A good intro as well to the development of this bible... James T Humphrey II from Huntersville, NC, USA.
"This is a complete comparison of the Hebrew Scriptures, New. I searched a long time to find a parallel bible containing the NAB and NJB. The others NSRV and REB were an added plus. The parallel design is to make a comparison of the more literal translation to the one that best follows the meaning. This is almost necessary as even the literal and meaning comparisons are still interpretations. Look at how they handle Psalms 88:19. For variations in verse numbering. In the front, there is a real nice description of how the different versions came about. The introduction has: The Translations and their Background, The Arraignment of the Translations, The Order of the Biblical Material · Variations in the Text of the Different Translations, Explanations of the Translators' Footnotes, Variations in Verse Numbering, Use of the Parallel Text." Bernard Chandler from Arlington, Texas.

Gospel According to John 1-12

by Raymond Edward Brown (Translator)
From the Anchor Bible Series, Volume 29.
In this first of three volumes on the writings of John (two on the Gospel and one on the letters of John), Raymond E. Brown introduces the reader to the beauty and complexity of the fourth Gospel. His translation of the Greek into ordinary English makes good common sense of the text. Patiently sifting through and weighing all the ancient sources and modern theories, Brown addresses with clarity the major issues surrounding the writings of John-questions of authorship, composition, date, and John's relation to the Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke). Unlike other commentaries on the Gospel of John, this one analyzes and presents the scholarly debates in a form that the interested layperson can appreciate. Whether discussing John's version of miracle stories found in the other Gospels, explaining the meaning of obscure Greek words, or pointing out the relevance of Jesus' words and deeds, Father Brown speaks to scholars and laypeople alike.
Raymond E. Brown, the foremost New Testament scholar in the U.S., is Auburn Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Biblical Studies at Union Theological Seminary in New York City. He holds over twenty honorary doctorates from Catholic and Protestant universities. He is author of over twenty-five books on the Bible, including the acclaimed volumes The Birth of the Messiah and The Death of the Messiah.

The Book of Common Prayer

The 1979 historic revision of the Episcopal Prayer Book is available in a wide variety of sizes and colors--perfect as baptismal, Confirmation, and marriage gifts.
"Gives me Direction in my prayer / worship life. My title sums up what I like about the BOCP in general. The Book contains daily readings and prayers for virtually every occasion. I find that it keeps me focused and gives direction to my quiet times. The Daily Office is a blessing. This edition (the hardback) is plain and simply beautiful. There is so much included in this little book virtually every Christian will find it valuable. Liberalism may have crept in slightly in this edition (1979) but it is still very traditional." David T. Bennett from Ohio.
"An excellent buy. The Book of Common Prayer is a wonderful addition to any Christian's library. It includes the various rites of the Episcopal Church, but also has assorted prayers, a lectionary, the Psalter, a catechism, and important documents from the Church. This particular edition, with its blue hardback cover and gilded edges, is beautiful. Although many prefer the 1928 edition, the 1979 edition will probably be fine for the average person in the Church. The Psalter no longer uses archaic language, but some of the prayers do. Overall, this is an excellent buy. The Book of Common Prayer is perfect for use in personal devotion and the life of the church." Jonathan Bennett from OH.

Brown-Driver-Briggs Hebrew-English Lexicon

by Francis Brown, SR Driver and Charles A Briggs.
With an Appendix containing the Biblical Aramaic.
It is coded with the Numbering System from Strong's.
The standard dictionary for Biblical Hebrew. JVB.
"A classic made easier to use... The classic BDB has been improved in this revision of the most complete 1906 edition, making it by far the most useful Hebrew lexicon available to the English-speaking student. This edition is coded to Strong's, thus allowing even those who do not know Hebrew ready access to this valuable tool. Numerous corrections have been made to the original and a new, larger format makes referencing even easier." The publisher, Hendrickson Publishers.
"I'm Not Sure That It Even Needs A Review. If you pulled up this title you probably have some interest in studying Bibilical Hebrew. If you plan on buying only one reference tool for those studies, this should be it. The contextual references and translations (although somewhat dated) are extensive and detailed. The The lexicography is the standard used or referenced by all of the other works in the field. The historical information is extremely useful if you plan on doing comparative work or focused eymologies. This is the single masterwork reference for Biblical Hebrew; and, if you are a seminary student, you will probably have to buy it anyway." C. Joshua Villines from ATLANTA, GA, USA.
"This is a standard introductory Hebrew lexicon. Includes an "Appendix Containing the Biblical Aramaic: Coded With the Numbering System from Strong's Exhaustive Concordance." Helpful and easy to use for those not too familiar with Hebrew." A book lover.

Grammar of Palestinian Jewish Aramaic

by William B. Stevenson
"Concise, sharp little grammar, with clear paradigms. Issue! I acquired this used at a theologue store, found the loss by theft grevious. This sharp, brief little grammar is in English with Hebrew-letter paradigms, is about all one needs for a deep first glance at this language, important for NT and Talmudic studies. Making the Eucharist Matter

by Frank Andersen
"Ideal reading for anyone who longs for a deep experience. Despite the best of intentions and the hard work of many, the bulk of people in Sunday congregations are not particularly involved in the ritual that is going on around them. How can it be that many find the celebration at the heart of Christian faith merely routine or even meaningless? And more importantly, what can we do about it? In this book Frank Andersen addresses these questions head-on, exploring how the liturgy's meaning can come alive for us, how it can ennoble and involve us. Grounding his reflections in the biblical roots of the Eucharist and in the earliest practice of the church, he explores the extraordinary possibilities that the Eucharist affords us: to embody Jesus and his values, and to embrace the compassion he showed for all. Making the Eucharist Matter is ideal reading for anyone who longs for a deep, rich experience of the Eucharist. The inclusion of questions for reflection for personal reading as well as for faith sharing groups." The publisher, Ave Maria Press.

No Logo : Taking Aim at the Brand Bullies

by Naomi Klein
"We live in an era where image is nearly everything, where the proliferation of brand-name culture has created, to take one hyperbolic example from Naomi Klein's No Logo, "walking, talking, life-sized Tommy [Hilfiger] dolls, mummified in fully branded Tommy worlds." Brand identities are even flourishing online, she notes--and for some retailers, perhaps best of all online: "Liberated from the real-world burdens of stores and product manufacturing, these brands are free to soar, less as the disseminators of goods or services than as collective hallucinations." In No Logo, Klein patiently demonstrates, step by step, how brands have become ubiquitous, not just in media and on the street but increasingly in the schools as well. (The controversy over advertiser-sponsored Channel One may be old hat, but many readers will be surprised to learn about ads in school lavatories and exclusive concessions in school cafeterias.) The global companies claim to support diversity, but their version of "corporate multiculturalism" is merely intended to create more buying options for consumers. When Klein talks about how easy it is for retailers like Wal-Mart and Blockbuster to "censor" the contents of videotapes and albums, she also considers the role corporate conglomeration plays in the process. How much would one expect Paramount Pictures, for example, to protest against Blockbuster's policies, given that they're both divisions of Viacom? Klein also looks at the workers who keep these companies running, most of whom never share in any of the great rewards. The president of Borders, when asked whether the bookstore chain could pay its clerks a "living wage," wrote that "while the concept is romantically appealing, it ignores the practicalities and realities of our business environment." Those clerks should probably just be grateful they're not stuck in an Asian sweatshop, making pennies an hour to produce Nike sneakers or other must-have fashion items. Klein also discusses at some length the tactic of hiring "permatemps" who can do most of the work and receive few, if any, benefits like health care, paid vacations, or stock options. While many workers are glad to be part of the "Free Agent Nation," observers note that, particularly in the high-tech industry, such policies make it increasingly difficult to organize workers and advocate for change. But resistance is growing, and the backlash against the brands has set in. Street-level education programs have taught kids in the inner cities, for example, not only about Nike's abusive labor practices but about the astronomical markup in their prices. Boycotts have commenced: as one urban teen put it, "Nike, we made you. We can break you." But there's more to the revolution, as Klein optimistically recounts: "Ethical shareholders, culture jammers, street reclaimers, McUnion organizers, human-rights hacktivists, school-logo fighters and Internet corporate watchdogs are at the early stages of demanding a citizen-centered alternative to the international rule of the brands ... as global, and as capable of coordinated action, as the multinational corporations it seeks to subvert." No Logo is a comprehensive account of what the global economy has wrought and the actions taking place to thwart it." Ron Hogan.
"Klein is a gifted writer; her paragraphs can be as seductive as the ad campaigns she dissects." James Ledbetter, The New York Times Book Review.
""Look for the dirt behind the shine". No Logo - Apart from a great content, the front cover is so good that you just want to stroke it....well thats part of its popularity at Goldsmiths College, London anyway. This book stated what I knew. Poor countries get rice money for making greedy Western companies products. But why did I like it so much? Because it really brought it home how branding dominates our lives and how people live around the world. People who make IBM computers in poor countries, its just a formula, they don't know how to even operate them! That I found shocking! But then very real. We just needed to read it in print to stick in our minds! It was a real eye-opener how it isn't about the product, but the brand! For example with Tommy' buying in the products then branding it. So it is definately true that behind the shine you should look for the dirt as she quotes in her book. This is a must have book for all media and cultural communications students. It gave me fantastic ideas about cultural economy/industries, and it almost seemed like a secret cult in the greasy cafe opposite college, where people confessed to be buying the book and praising it for reading like a novel, but being brilliantly informatively. I must agree though that a sense of balance was lacking. Where were the counter arguments to what she was saying. cheers anyway Naomi!" Paul from Newcross, South East London, UK.
"You'll never look at a can of Pepsi the same way again... In No Logo, Klein tidily dissects her exploration of the abuses of corporations who have foregone products in favor of brands into four sections: no space, no choice, no jobs, and finally--you guessed it--no logo. The first three sections give us ample evidence why we have every right to be sick and tired of being marketed to and what the consequences of it have been for us: instrusive advertising we can't even escape from in public restrooms, branded schools and universities where kids are forced to watch commercials on Channel One and athletes are forced to be moving billboards for Nike, the loss of local businesses as mega-corporations like Blockbuster and Walmart take over, the loss of some of our freedom as corporations begin to dictate what we can and can't view, read or hear, and finally, the loss of jobs as companies abandon US workers in pursuit of sweatshop labor. Make no mistake: this book will make you mad, and by section four, in which Klein proposes solutions, you'll be more than ready to entertain her ideas. This is a really good introductory text if you're interested in the anti-corporate movement and want a good overview of the causes and conditions as well as what can be done. Klein's book is well researched, organized and presented and she makes her points without being overly pedantic. My only complaint about this book is that certain parts of it are very long-winded and could have easily been clipped from the text without losing anything, particularly Klein's exhaustive examination of sweatshops. Good if you don't mind skimming or skipping long passages. One final note--her portrayal of Nike's Phil Knight is priceless. Buy the book if for nothing other that that!" V.Y. King.
"Propaganda Exposed. It's not often that you get such a huge book that is written so clearly and so well that it reads like it's only a few hundred pages instead of over 500. As a progressive journalist, Ms. Klien is critically insightful in the way she helps readers understand the role branding, advertising, labor, politics, and oppression in the context of a global/imperialist economy. Not only does she help us connect with what we already should know about companies like Nkie, McDonalds, and the Gap, but she also provides the context for their global exploitation of workers and consumers. I would strongly suggest that her work be followed up with a reading of Stewart Ewen's PR!: A History of Spin and Jane Kilbournes's Deadly Persuasions. These works, amongst others, expose well just how powerful but sadly how unacknowledged the propaganda industry of advertising and consumer culture is. This consumer culture help shapes values, desires, prejudices, and apathy toward non-consumer areas of society. In other words, these works help us understand how the American/Western society is centered around the buying and selling of goods and labor. They describe how advertising works to influence consumption in a country like America where there are endless amounts of goods and services that must be bought in order to feed the profit machine of growing numbers of millionaires and billionaires. Finally, these works provide an analysis of the economic, political, environmental and social consequences of such high levels of consumption and production. No Logo has many lessons to teach us, but it's up to us to head those lessons." Bakari Chavanu from Sacramento, CA, United States.

Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America

by Barbara Ehrenreich
"Essayist and cultural critic Barbara Ehrenreich has always specialized in turning received wisdom on its head with intelligence, clarity, and verve. With some 12 million women being pushed into the labor market by welfare reform, she decided to do some good old-fashioned journalism and find out just how they were going to survive on the wages of the unskilled--at $6 to $7 an hour, only half of what is considered a living wage. So she did what millions of Americans do, she looked for a job and a place to live, worked that job, and tried to make ends meet. As a waitress in Florida, where her name is suddenly transposed to "girl", trailer trash becomes a demographic category to aspire to with rent at $675 per month. In Maine, where she ends up working as both a cleaning woman and a nursing home assistant, she must first fill out endless pre-employment tests with trick questions such as "Some people work better when they're a little bit high." In Minnesota, she works at Wal-Mart under the repressive surveillance of men and women whose job it is to monitor her behavior for signs of sloth, theft, drug abuse, or worse. She even gets to experience the humiliation of the urine test. So, do the poor have survival strategies unknown to the middle class? And did Ehrenreich feel the "bracing psychological effects of getting out of the house, as promised by the wonks who brought us welfare reform?" Nah. Even in her best-case scenario, with all the advantages of education, health, a car, and money for first month's rent, she has to work two jobs, seven days a week, and still almost winds up in a shelter. As Ehrenreich points out with her potent combination of humor and outrage, the laws of supply and demand have been reversed. Rental prices skyrocket, but wages never rise. Rather, jobs are so cheap as measured by the pay that workers are encouraged to take as many as they can. Behind those trademark Wal-Mart vests, it turns out, are the borderline homeless. With her characteristic wry wit and her unabashedly liberal bent, Ehrenreich brings the invisible poor out of hiding and, in the process, the world they inhabit--where civil liberties are often ignored and hard work fails to live up to its reputation as the ticket out of poverty." Lesley Reed.

What's So Amazing About Grace?

by Philip Yancey
"Mention the word "grace" and what immediately comes to mind for most of us is a bagpipe wailing the solemn notes of "Amazing Grace". The grace of which Philip Yancey writes is the freely given and unmerited favor and love of God. This grace seems a remote, almost sentimental concept, without a place in our lives or our society. It is a vague, slippery thing to us, probably because we seem to experience grace so rarely and have managed to leech the word of meaning. But Philip Yancey has set about to rescue grace in his book What's So Amazing About Grace? This grace is the true message of Jesus. All faiths have virtues and creeds and justice and truth, but Jesus speaks merely of receiving the love that God has for us. Accepting it, not earning it or making ourselves worthy of it. And frankly, accepting something we have not earned or are not worthy of is not an easy thing for most of us. In truth, grace is both utterly simple and utterly confounding. Little by little, Yancey guides us into a clearer understanding of grace by using stories, in much the same way Jesus did. We read stories of both grace and ungrace at work in people's lives. Sadly, it is stories of ungrace that are more prevalent today, the current culture wars painful acknowledgments of ungrace in our lives as Christians in this country. Yancey helps us understand that ungrace is that state of being in which self-righteousness and pride are a result of thinking that we have somehow earned God's approval and may now stand in judgment in his behalf. Philip Yancey was awarded the Gold Medallion Christian Book of the Year award for this book in 1998 by the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association. Readers concurred with this decision, making this book an immediate bestseller. Believers and nonbelievers alike should accept Yancey's challenge to become agents of grace rather than agents of vengeance or judgment or anger. In truth, we are each starving for grace, ready to grasp it tightly. And it is through grace that all other hungers--for justice, for righteousness, for love--are satisfied. Yancey opens his book by telling us that "grace" is the last best word, and in What's So Amazing About Grace?, he proves that he's right." Patricia Klein.
On the heels of Philip Yancey's best-selling "The Jesus I Never Knew" comes his equally important and tautological treatment of grace, the engine that powers Christian love and pushes evil away with forgiveness.
"A most encouraging and challenging book on Christianity. Philip Yancey is one of my favorite authors, and this book is definitely one of his best. We live in a sick world that is desperately searching for hope and meaning. God's grace is the answer to all of life's problems, and those who follow Christ have the answer to all the questions; yet grace like God's is so unfathomable from our earthly perspective. Yancey does an admirable job in putting "flesh" on the concept of biblical grace - - showing us what it is, by giving us examples of grace and "ungrace," as Yancey calls it, in the lives of real people. Not a boring theological treatise, but an immensely encouraging book that offers a glimpse of the depth and expansiveness of God's amazing grace. Chapter Two, in which Yancey summarizes the plot of the movie "Babette's Feast" as a beautiful parable of what grace looks like is worth the price of the book alone! But Yancey is also honest enough to admit that the church mostly does a very poor job of extending God's grace to others -- a much needed wake-up call for Christians. All this to say - - read this book!" Nicholas Vafiades from Colorado Springs, CO.

The Bible for the Clueless but Curious

Finally, A Guide to Jewish Wisdom for Real People
by Nachum Braverman.
A storehouse of ancient wisdom is now available in everyday language. From spirituality to relationships and personal potential, Jewish wisdom has been tackling life's ultimate issues for 3,000 years--and it all flows from the Torah, the Jewish Bible.
"Excellent, clear introduction to the Jewish faith. I was not raised in a religious household -- so I was clueless and curious. This book covers only the Old Testament and is a perfectly explained and readable history of the Jews -- a Cliffs Notes of the Bible. This is a gentle tour of Biblical doctorine, and there is little mention of the "shalt nots" which often scare away potential belivers. Light, but informative and rewarding, this is an excellent book for teenagers, Jews who are not familiar with their faith, or people like me who just want to know more about the world of religion." Gregory D. Stanton from Los Angeles, CA, USA.
"A wonderful and easy-to-read guide for everyone. This book gave me so much insight on the Bible and did it in an inviting, non-apprehensive way. I never thought I would enjoy it so much. The author truly appreciates the spiritual needs of those who may not be the most knowledgeable on the topic. I highly recommend it and have given three different people my copy to borrow. It's so popular, we even bought a second one to lend out!" A reader from Columbus, Ohio.
"A great book by a great teacher. Rabbi Braverman writes a terrific and easy to understand description (and lessons) of the Bible. It is truely written for those, like myself, who really want to learn, but never knew where to start. I highly recomend this book." Shawn Hurwitz from Houston, Texas.
"Great Book - Easy reading with tremendous insight and wit. This book is essentially a "Bible for dummies" written in a way that gives the reader lessons from the Bible that one can apply to their lives, without some of the difficult language. The author translates each part of the Bible into today's terms and provides commentary on it that is both insightful and entertaining. For those that are do not read the Bible and/or are generally intimidated by it, this is the book for you. I learned from this book, as will anyone who reads it." A reader from Los Angeles, CA.

Dictionary of Biblical Imagery

Edited by Leland Ryken, Jim Wilhoit, Tremper Longman and James C. Wilhoit.
"An exploration of the symbols and metaphors of the Bible. Every reader of the Bible has encountered the powerful, comforting and sometimes puzzling imagery of Scripture. These concrete pictures with their hidden force have struck sharp and lasting impressions on our minds. Their imprint has etched itself on the language and grammar of Christian faith and Western culture. Traditional Bible dictionaries and reference works offer little help to explorers of the Bible's galaxy of verbal pictures. They excel in describing the climate, borders and location of Galilee or Sinai. But they are often blind to the artistic expressions and deaf to the musical meanings that echo from within the world of the biblical text. The Dictionary of Biblical Imagery is the first contemporary reference work dedicated to exploring the images, symbols, motifs, metaphors and literary patterns found in the Bible. More than that, it examines the Bible's universal archetypes or master images--including the plot motifs and character types that recur throughout life, literature and the Bible. The Dictionary of Biblical Imagery explores the dazzling variety in which the Word of God comes dressed in the clothes of everyday life. It traces the trail of images from Eden to the New Jerusalem. It captures the plotted patterns of biblical narrative. It surveys the imaged texture of each book of the Bible. Here is a Bible dictionary with a difference--an inviting, enlightening and indispensable companion to the reading, study, contemplation and enjoyment of the Bible.
"Praise for the Dictionary of Biblical Imagery: "The human mind is a picture gallery, and we live by the images found in it. This massive and careful work can aid us all in glimpsing the multitudinous pictures that are given us in the Scriptures to transform our lives." Elizabeth Achtemeier, writer, lecturer, preacher
"People think with pictures in their heads. The Bible is God's picture book even though it is all in words. The Dictionary of Biblical Imagery helps us to see the verbal pictures that we may have missed and then helps us to make sense of them. The Dictionary is a helpful tool for Bible study--and it's even fun to read." Haddon Robinson, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary." Submitted by The publisher, InterVarsity Press.
"Commentaries and Study Bibles, Step Aside. The Bible is Back. Put your commentaries at the bottom of the pile. Put your study Bibles (God's Word with man's opinions presumptiously slipped in with it) with your commentaries. Here is a book that uses the Bible to interpret the Bible (which commentaries rarely do). This book is an objective approach to Bible interpretation, using scriptures throughout the Bible in their context to determine the meaning of Bible words as the Bible defines them--Scripture defining Scripture. The book deals with figures of speech, figures of association, metonymy, synechdoche, metaphors and similies, cultures, writing techniques, and far more. It is written clearly and concisely, with much detail. It reads dynamically and even devotionally. It is written at a level for any person who wants to study the Bible seriously and correctly without being a heavy theological work. This book is not written as a commentary on Bible texts, but is a resource to help you let the Bible be it's own commentary. When I use this book which, again, uses scripture to explain scripture, I rarely use a commentary. With this book, I can study the Bible on my own (which is what God primarily intends) and use the book as a scripture resource to help determine what concepts are imbedded in the text by the use of certain words and writing techniques. Commentaries are okay when one gets stuck in their thought processes or when they need a nudge of what a text may be saying. Commentaries can help us think in new directions and think "out of the box." But commentaries must only be used to spur one on. They must not be used to just lift an answer from someone and just blindly use it, thus taking the easy way out and putting blind trust in someone else just because they have an education. But this dictionary isn't a commentary. It reads very openly and is self discerning because it is so Bible based. It recognizes that the first rule of Bible interpretation is the Bible contexts themselves. Buy one. Use it. You won't be needing your commentaries too much because you'll have a major tool that will help you seek God for yourself and what He is saying in His Word to you, not what someone else thinks you need to hear. This book allows you to be personal with God in His Word. So open your Bible, place this help with you, and learn more easily what God is saying." Christopher Alsruhe from Maryland.
"Helps to bring out the spiritual meaning of the Bible. So often we are limited in our inspiration from the Bible because of following only the literal meanings of its stories, passages and admonitions. By understanding the symbolical meanings we can go higher in our inspiration. This book helps to do just that. For example, Ephesians 6:10-17 would be ridiculous if taken literally, but taken spiritually it is powerful and uplifting. Great job IVP. My only complaint is this should have been sold in two volumes with larger type and more words to explore!!!" A reader from Ohio.
"Very helpful to read the Bible. The authors are skillful in biblical imagery. And the book is necessary to all the Bible student." A reader from Seoul, South Korea.

"The Ultimate One-volume Christian Reference Work ...This volume is non-denominational and non-polemic. It does not seek to convince, but rather to inform. And it accomplishes its task with impressive thoroughness. Even if you already have an earlier edition, strongly consider this purchase." David Zampino.
"The dictionary that you want to read for pleasure. This is an excelent tool for research and information. I find that when I look up one topic, I am reading the references and what comes before and after what I originally wanted to know. It's accurate, brief and easy to read. It's a must have book for serious students of theology and history. I am an Episcopal Deacon and Hospital Chaplain. I also teach in our School for the Diaconate. The Oxford Companion to the Bible

by Bruce M. Metzger and Michael D. Coogan
"A comprehensive reference to the people, places, events, books, institutions, religious beliefs, and secular influences of the Bible. Written by over 250 scholars from some 20 nations who embrace a variety of perspectives, the Companion offers approximately 700 entries ranging from brief identifications to long interpretive essays on topics as varied as the influence of the Bible on literature, music, and the law. For reference or relaxation, this becomes the family/library Companion to own." Book News, Inc. Portland, Or.
"After covering most of the world's major national literatures and literary genres, with this volume the venerable Oxford Companion series finally addresses perhaps the most famous literary work of all. According to the introduction, The Oxford Companion to the Bible (OCB) "is an authoritative reference for key persons, places, events, concepts, institutions, and realities of biblical times." Taking what is called a "maximalist position," the volume treats "any book or part of a book that is recognized as canonical by any religious community." Editors Metzger, coeditor of The New Oxford Annotated Bible with the Apocrypha (1991), and Coogan, an associate editor of the Catholic Biblical Quarterly, have compiled a work that will stand for some time as a definitive one-volume treatment of the Bible. The Oxford Companion to the Bible opens with a list of the 267 contributors, most academically affiliated, who come from a variety of religious backgrounds. The volume is arranged alphabetically by topic, with cross-references within articles noted by an asterisk before the word, and many see references scattered throughout the work. All articles are signed. The volume concludes with a bibliography, an index, and 14 color maps (each a two-page spread) with an index. Entries vary greatly in length, from some 200 words for Blasphemy and Fear to more than 22 pages for Literature and the Bible and more than 29 pages for the longest entry, Translations. Many entries are subdivided into separate articles, each with a separate contributor (e.g., Interpretation, History of). Taking into account these separate articles, OCB features 706 articles within 668 entries. As with other Oxford companions, the work features readable articles that the educated layperson can understand. Although the introduction states that it can be used by "students and teachers in high schools," some articles such as Ecclesiastes, The Book of, which describes the book as "less ecclesial than sapiential," may be difficult for the high school student. Given the relatively low number of entries compared with other one-volume works on the Bible, it would be unfair to compare OCB with works such as Harper's Bible Dictionary, which contains some 3,700 biblical terms with entries on every name used at least three times in the Bible. OCB goes into greater detail on topics than Harper's but avoids an entry for every person or event. Unique to OCB are such thematic entries as African American Tradition and the Bible, Children's Bibles, Freud and the Bible, and Popular Culture and the Bible. Whereas Women receives 21/2 pages in Harper's, OCB devotes 12 pages to the topic. Traditional entries, such as those on most of the books of the Bible, are dealt with in equally notable fashion. The one drawback to this volume is the lack of bibliographies at the end of entries. While this is not an unusual practice in Oxford companions, the concluding 114-entry bibliography seems downright meager when confronted with the breadth of the work. Although the subdivision by 13 topics ("History," "Textual Criticism," etc.) within the bibliography helps, one wishes for more. On the other hand, the detailed index is a welcome enhancement (a feature missing from Harper's), allowing the reader to note where, for example, Moses is mentioned throughout the volume. The index also includes each contributor's name with the page numbers written. Even for libraries that already seemingly have their fill of reference works on the Bible, OCB provides a significant addition to the reference literature, providing a substantial amount of depth at a reasonable price. While Harper's still is adequate for ready reference, The Oxford Companion to the Bible provides more substance on many topics." Booklist.
The Bible has had an immeasurable influence on Western culture, touching on virtually every aspect of our lives. It is one of the great wellsprings of Western religious, ethical, and philosophical traditions. It has been an endless source of inspiration to artists, from classic works such as Michaelangelo's Last Judgment, Handel's Messiah, or Milton's Paradise Lost, to modern works such as Thomas Mann's Joseph and His Brothers or Martin Scorsese's controversial Last Temptation of Christ. For countless generations, it has been a comfort in suffering, a place to reflect on the mysteries of birth, death, and immortality. Its stories and characters are an integral part of the repertoire of every educated adult, forming an enduring bond that spans thousands of years and embraces a vast community of believers and nonbelievers. The Oxford Companion to the Bible provides an authoritative one-volume reference to the people, places, events, books, institutions, religious belief, and secular influence of the Bible. Written by more than 250 scholars from some 20 nations and embracing a wide variety of perspectives, the Companion offers over seven hundred entries, ranging from brief identifications--who is Dives? where is Pisgah?--to extensive interpretive essays on topics such as the influence of the Bible on music or law. Ranging far beyond the scope of a traditional Bible dictionary, the Companion features, in addition to its many informative, factual entries, an abundance of interpretive essays. Here are extended entries on religious concepts from immortality, sin, and grace, to baptism, ethics, and the Holy Spirit. The contributors also explore biblical views of modern issues such as homosexuality, marriage, and anti-Semitism, and the impact of the Bible on the secular world (including a four-part article on the Bible's influence on literature). Of course, the Companion can also serve as a handy reference, the first place to turn to find factual information on the Bible. Readers will find fascinating, informative articles on all the books of the Bible--including the Apocrypha and many other ancient texts, such as the Dead Sea Scrolls, Pseudepigrapha, and the Mishrah. Virtually every figure who walked across the biblical stage is identified here, ranging from Rebekah, Rachel, and Mary, to Joseph, Barabbas, and Jesus. The Companion also offers entries that shed light on daily life in ancient Israel and the earliest Christian communities, with fascinating articles on feasts and festivals, clothing, medicine, units of time, houses, and furniture. Finally, there are twenty-eight pages of full-color maps, providing an accurate, detailed portrait of the biblical world. A vast compendium of information related to scriptures, here is an ideal complement to the Bible, an essential volume for every home and library, the first place to turn for information on the central book of Western culture.
Features interpretive articles on the Bible's impact on the Western world and its influence on literature, music, art, and law, as well as entries on each book of the Bible, the major figures, important events, and life in biblical times...

More Than Houses : How Habitat for Humanity is Transforming Lives and Neighborhoods

by Millard Fuller
"Fuller's seventh book about Habitat for Humanity primarily tells the stories of people whose lives have been changed by its work. The stories' subjects include volunteer workers on the houses the world-spanning project builds and those who eventually occupied the "simple, decent" homes. Fuller presents the stories in thematic chapters on how Habitat's work has enhanced children's lives, transformed entire families, created neighborhoods, launched new careers, made friendships, bridged differences among participants, led to several marriages, etc. The intent of the book as a whole is to demonstrate that Habitat is building more than just houses. Habitat's "hundreds of thousands of volunteers, staff people, and homeowners," Fuller writes, "are truly, I think, an exciting part of building the kingdom of God on earth." The stories and Fuller's attitude attest that although Habitat is a forthright Christian endeavor, proselytizing is not part of its program, but recruiting your hands and building skills definitely are." Ray Olson, Booklist.
In these pages you will find inspiring, true stories of people who didn't have hope—until they had a home. Stories of children who gained identity and confidence for their future. Of families made stronger and healthier and prison inmates who are now giving back to their communities. Of entire comminutes bonding together around an ethic of hard work and mutual respect. Of denominational, political, and racial barriers falling with every swing of the hammer. Of a growing host of young people engaged in the quest to end poverty housing. And even some wonderful love stories.
"Habitat for Humanity is more than houses! This book is a great account of the other aspects of Habitat. Habitat is more than houses because it involves people -- not just physical buildings. Fuller describes how Habitat gives people a sense of pride and a chance to move on in their life. As well, Fuller explains that Habitat gives people the opportunity to meet who never would have met or allow people (i.e. prisoners) the chance to volunteer with Habitat. Habitat for Humanity also can foster romantic relationships, of which Fuller gives accurate accounts. Habitat for Humanity believes that God's love makes everyone equal. Millard Fuller writes a very descriptive account of how Habitat is more than houses, it is a way of life." A reader from Pensacola, FL.

The Theology of the Hammer

by Millard Fuller "The Fullers sold their business, donated all the money to charity, and went in search of a new dream. Twenty years later, Fuller and his wife are sharing that dream: Habitat for Humantity International." Ingram.
"The story of Habitat for Humanity International. Millard Fuller had come face-to-face with the reality of the American dream: He was a millionaire workaholic with a marriage on the skids. The cure was a radical one. The Fullers sold their business, donated all the money to charity, and went in search of a new dream. Twenty years later, Fuller and his wife are sharing that dream: Habitat for Humanity International." The publisher, Smyth & Helwys Publishing.
"Summarizes the Christian foundation of Habitat for Humanity. Many of Millard Fuller's books tell the remarkable stories that have come from the ministry of Habitat for Humanity. This book's focus, however, is how Habitat's ministry fulfills the Biblical command to love one another. This book doesn't lack for stories and anecdotes, but the purpose of this book is to explain the theological basis which calls people (Christians and non-Christians alike) to come together to help God's people in need. It's a must read for anyone contemplating deep involvement in Habitat's work." Alan Johnson from Hilliard, Ohio, USA.
