The Chronicles of Narnia

If you enjoyed Harry Potter, you will love The Chronicles of Narnia. As well as the boxed sets below, you can also buy the induvidual books in the series. As suggested by the pricing, a Mass Market paperback uses lower grade paper and binding than a normal paperback, or "Trade Paperback".

The Chronicles of Narnia Boxed Set

The Magician's Nephew; The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe; The Horse and His Boy; Prince Caspian; The Silver Chair; The Voyage of the Dawn Treader; and The Last Battle
by C. S. Lewis and various illustrators.
Reading level: Ages 9-12
The Chronicles of Narnia, by C.S. Lewis, is one of the very few sets of books that should be read three times: in childhood, early adulthood, and late in life. In brief, four children travel repeatedly to a world in which they are far more than mere children and everything is far more than it seems. Richly told, populated with fascinating characters, perfectly realized in detail of world and pacing of plot, and profoundly allegorical, the story is infused throughout with the timeless issues of good and evil, faith and hope. This boxed set edition includes all seven volumes.
Enter C. S. Lewis's magical land of Narnia, where enchanted creatures live and fierce battles are fought between good and evil. Each book stands alone as a work of genius, but together all seven tell the entire history of a fantastic world that becomes as real as our own. These rack-sized paperback editions by Leo and Diane Dillon are available in a handsome boxed set. Includes "The Horse and His Boy, The Last Battle, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, The Magician's Nephew, Prince Caspian, The Silver Chair" and "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.".
Like Tolkien, C.S. Lewis has redefined the nature of fantasy, adding richness, beauty, and dimension. His Narnia Chronicles are not only breathtaking and heartlifting adventures for young and old, they are, as well, reflections of Lewis' most deeply held beliefs.
"B>Truly Exceptional Stories for ALL ages! The Narnian Chronicles have been my favorite series since I first read (and devoured) them in third grade (I'm now 30). I have since reread them many times, enjoying them even more each time as I see new things previously undiscovered or not understood. They are entertaining, imaginative, and thought-provoking from many perspectives, and will appeal even to the mature 5 or 6-year-old child as a read-aloud adventure. These books are truly worthy of discussion with your elementary, middle school, or high school student. College students have even written theses about these books and their many intriguing themes. I recently gave the entire set to my eighty-year-old grandmother as a gift, and she read them all within a couple of weeks! She said they were so good, she couldn't put them down, and she has loved talking to me about them ever since! My husband's 90-year-old grandmother is also an avid reader, finishing a book every few days. I am planning on giving the Narnia books to her as well! You simply can't go wrong purchasing these books. This is a wonderfully appealing fantasy series for all ages- it will surely be an enduring classic for generations to come. A reader from Portland, Oregon.
"The Narnian Chronicles and the deception of order. There is a modern misconception concerning C.S. Lewis's great children's series, 'The Narnian Chronicles.' Due to changes during reprinting, the orignal order of his seven-part series was disrupted to conform to the overall story-line. When the books were written, Mr. Lewis began his series with the classic christian allegory, 'The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe.' He then went on to write the remaining novels in a non-traditional, non-chronological order: Part two of the Chronicles was 'Prince Caspian.' Next came 'The Voyage of the Dawn Treader', 'The Silver Chair', 'The Magician's Nephew','The Horse and His Boy', and finally,'The Last Battle.' Lewis released his stories in this order, and I urge every reader to follow the original, proper sequence. It transforms a mere fantasy series into some of the single best children's novels in print. The symbolism of Christian allegory and morals will rest in the minds of all who read them; giving the reader a taste of hope and the power of God. May Aslan be with you as you and you family venture through 'The Chronicles of Narnia.' J. Monaghan from Kansas.
"Once a king or queen of Narnia always a king or queen of Narnia. These books were given to me as a gift by my Aunt about 26 years ago. I remember reading them and enjoying them as fairy tales, and only years later realizing there was also an underlying theology tale being told by a great writer. Any way you read them they are a wonderfully entertaining story in a world that you love more than your own: Children, theology students, Fantasy role playing game players, all will like these books. As a child these books were unparalleled in their creativity and imagination. How C.S. Lewis was able to write so well for children when he had none of his own is astounding. My only disappointment so many years ago is when I finished the last, and realized there were no more to read." William Bagot from San Diego, CA, USA.
"A MUST-READ CLASSIC FOR KIDS & ADULTS. This set of seven books can be read on several levels in the different stages of life - as a child appreciating the magic and mystery of the world of Narnia, and as an adult appreciating the rich imagery and symbolism that has made Lewis famous. Particularly evident in this series is Lewis' Christian heritage, and the allegorical aspects of these books continue to impress multitudes of readers today. This series of books is unarguably a fantasy classic, and unquestionably deserves a place in the library of both children and adults." A reader from Ontario, Canada.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

by C. S. Lewis. Illustrated by Pauline Baynes.
The first written book in The Chronicles of Narnia. Reading level: Ages 9-12
"The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. A long time ago, four children found a magical world beyond (what they thought was) an ordinary wardrobe. This magical world led them to many adventures in a magical place called Narnia. I read The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe in less than three hours because it was so interesting and captivating. This is now my favorite book. After I read The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, I bought the other books in the series. I recommend that others do too. I enjoyed reading this book and then the Magician's Nephew. My favorite character is Aslan. Aslan is a lion that comes to save Narnia from the White Witch. Aslan is very courageous. My second favorite character is Lucy. Lucy was the first to enter Narnia. At the end, Lucy was named Queen Lucy the Valiant. My least favorite character is the White Witch. She made Narnia always winter but never Christmas. She also turned things to stone. She was truly an evil witch. My second least favorite character is Edmund, at the beginning. He lied and could have gotten his brother and sisters killed. Edmund became a better person in the end. My favorite part was when Aslan's army were battling the White Witch's army. I also liked when Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy were crowned Kings and Queens. Peter was crowned King Peter the Magnificent. Susan was crowned Queen Susan the Gentle. Edmund was crowned King Edmund the Just, and Lucy was crowned Queen Lucy the Valiant. My least favorite part was when Edmund entered the wardrobe. When he entered Narnia he met the White Witch. Edmund decided to betray his brother and sisters and take them to the White Witch. Then when he got out of Narnia he lied and said he had never been there. I enjoyed The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. I would recommend it to anyone who has an imagination. I also recommend the other books in this series." "Buffy" from MTC.
"The first book published in the Narnia series. The first book in the famous allegorical Chronicles of Narnia fantasy series for children. Four English school children (Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy) visit an old Professor to avoid the air raids in London during World War II. They discover an "entrance" to a world of fantasy through a wardrobe. It is a world that will change them forever. They assist the golden lion Aslan to defeat the White Witch who has cursed Narnia with eternal winter: the classic conflict of good vs. evil. This is the first in the Chronicles to be published. However, "The Magician's Nephew" relates events that take place before the events in this book and many, including the publisher, suggest that individuals read that book first. I disagree. I think the series flows much better when read in the order of their publication. As one reads the series, particularly with the last volume, one become more attuned to the spiritual aspects of the tales. And in responce to muchadoaboutlisa from Australia (of May 6, 1999), as we can tell from the last volume, Narnia does exist." R. D. Allison from Gainesville, Florida, USA.
"Layers upon layers... There is more to this book than meets the eye. You have to search deeper. The allegory to the sacrifice of Christ is very real. I like the fact that kids can continue to read them as they grow older. I just wish Lewis had written more books in the series." Karissa Clark from Portland, OR.
"Delightful. This wonderful little book was, at one time, the first in the Chronicles of Narnia series, written by the late C.S. Lewis, a Christian philosopher and literatus. It was the first one I read, and is a delightful story. Both children and adults who enjoy the fantasy genre should enjoy this book. It is centered around four children who, while staying as guests at an old mansion, walk through a wardrobe and find themselves in a completely different world. There, they have many adventures and get involved in a great conflict between an evil witch, who is oppressing the land with an eternal winter, and the good king Aslan, who comes back to his country after a long absence to fight the witch's evil works. Anyone with a church or Sunday-school background should quickly recognize the Christian elements in this story, and I think it is safe for young children to read. It is a charming tale and worth reading again and again. Buy the whole Narnia set, read all the books, and pass them on to your children." Rodney D. Williams from Sarasota, FL.

Authoritarian Fictions : The Ideological Novel as a Literary Genre

by Susan Rubin Suleiman
Political ideologies often informed early twentieth-century French novels, creating a hybrid genre that is both "realist" and didactic: the roman thse. In this ground-breaking and critically acclaimed work, Susan Suleiman looks beyond the politics of novels by such authors as Malraux, Mauriac, Sartre, and Aragon, and examines their shared formal and generic features. Although the genre itself is considered antimodern, the critical and interpretive problems it raises are central to an understanding of both realist and modernist writing. "The great virtue of [Suleiman's] book is its ability to synthesize a range of theoretical ideas--whether formalist, structuralist or "reader-response' in the service of a clear and compelling critical argument."--Christopher Norris, The London Review of Books. "This book is certainly one of the best examples of semiotic theory put to use for interpretation of literature and its relation to culture." Thas Morgan, Genre.

Cantor's Dilemma

by Carl Djerassi
When Professor Isidore Cantor reveals his latest breakthrough in cancer research, his promising research fellow, Dr. Jeremiah Stafford, has only to conduct the experiment and win Cantor the Nobel prize. But how far will Stafford go to guarantee the results? Carl Djerassi draws from his career as a world-famous scientist to describe the fierce competition driving scientific superstars in this gripping novel.
"Consider this novel as a teaching tool. This novel is the first volume in a tetralogy of novels in the rarely used genre of "science-in-fiction"--not to be confused with science fiction. (For further explanation, see Djerassi's home page). CANTOR'S DILEMMA came out in paperback in 1991 (Penguin-USA) and has had to be reprinted once or twice every year since then because it is now used as a text or supplementary reading in many colleges and universities (and even some high schools)to illuminate the highly tribal culture of contemporary research scientists. Of particular relevance are the ethical issues raised in this novel and the subsequent volumes (THE BOURBAKI GAMBIT and MENACHEM'S SEED).Though presented in the guise of fiction, they deal with urgent, timely real issues as indicated by the following title of one of Djerassi's lectures: "NOBLE SCIENCE AND NOBEL LUST: DISCLOSING TRIBAL SECRETS THROUGH SCIENCE-IN-FICTION." Queries as well as commentary or criticism are welcome via e-mail (djerassi@stanford.com)." The author, Carl Djerassi.
"That's what happening! It reveals the bones of human and tells us the reality." A reader from Hong Kong.
"Interesting subject, solid writing. Kudos for Dr. Djerassi for sharing with us his knowledge about the inner works of science in an entertaining way. Anyone interested in a career in hardcore science in the U.S. should read this book." A reader from Cambridge, MA.

Lunch with Elizabeth David: A Novel

by Roger Williams
"A delightfully inventive ragout of fiction and historical fact, Roger Williams's first novel revolves around a pair of 20th-century icons. There is Norman Douglas, the erudite charmer, gourmet, scoffer, quaffer, and high-spirited pederast, best known as the author of South Wind. And there is Elizabeth David, who transformed Britain's humdrum eating habits in 1950 with the publication of Mediterranean Food. A homage to both of these glorious hedonists, Lunch with Elizabeth David comes in two parts, divided roughly along his-and-hers lines..." Ruthie Petrie.

Three Days of the Condor

From: 1975
Starring: Robert Redford, Faye Dunaway, et al.
Director: Sydney Pollack
An Amazon.com essential video.
"Robert Redford and Sydney Pollack continued their longtime collaboration (the actor and director have worked together on Jeremiah Johnson, The Way We Were, The Electric Horseman, and Out of Africa, among other films) with this taut spy drama. Redford plays a reader for U.S. intelligence who becomes a hunted man after he is not among the victims of a mass murder of his colleagues. Faye Dunaway does solid work as the frightened and mystified woman whom he forces to conceal him, and Max von Sydow is appropriately cool as a professional assassin. That same, sustained tone of danger and expectation that made Pollack's The Firm so much fun can be found in this 1975 thriller, albeit with an appropriate dose of post-Watergate paranoia." Tom Keogh.
"Redford, a reader for U. S. intelligence office, learns more than he should, and suddenly finds himself a hunted man. Dunaway is excellent as innocent woman who shelters him. Good suspense yarn. Panavision." Leonard Maltin's Movie & Video Guide.
"A Timeless Classic. THREE DAYS OF THE CONDOR is one of the finest espionage thrillers ever filmed. But it's not just entertaining. The script is thought-provoking and reflects fears and paranoias that still pervade our country's consciousness today. Robert Redford has never been better. His character is a refreshing hero who succeeds using his brain, not his brawn or some ridiculous firepower. There are so many great supporting performances as well, including Cliff Robertson, John Houseman and Faye Dunaway (who looks simply gorgeous). Max VonSydow plays the ultimate assasin for hire, equalled only by Edward Fox's turn in THE DAY OF THE JACKAL. The film's editing is perfect and the music score (by Dave Grusin) still sounds great, (quite a feat since the music from many films of this period sound terribly dated). All in all, I consider this possibly the best example of a domestic (versus international) espionage thriller and faultless in all aspects of production. The final freeze-frame shot is a stunner." The Chocolate War

by Robert Cormier
Reading level: Ages 9-12 / Young Adult
"Does Jerry Renault dare to disturb the universe? You wouldn't think that his refusal to sell chocolates during his school's fundraiser would create such a stir, but it does; it's as if the whole school comes apart at the seams. To some, Jerry is a hero, but to others, he becomes a scapegoat--a target for their pent-up hatred. And Jerry? He's just trying to stand up for what he believes, but perhaps there is no way for him to escape becoming a pawn in this game of control; students are pitted against other students, fighting for honor--or are they fighting for their lives? In 1974, author Robert Cormier dared to disturb our universe when this book was first published. And now, with a new introduction by the celebrated author, The Chocolate War stands ready to shock a new group of teen readers." Amazon.
"...The masterful account of freshman Jerry Renault's own lonely battle against the ruling powers of his school is as provocative and disturbing today as it was to readers over twenty years ago." The Horn Book, Inc.
Stunned by his mother's recent death and appalled by the way his father sleepwalks through life, Jerry Renault, a New England high school student, ponders the poster in his locker - Do I dare disturb the universe? Part of his universe is Archie Costello, leader of a secret school societ-the Virgils-and master of intimidation. Archie himself is intimidated by a cool, ambitious teacher into having the Virgils spearhead the annual fund-raising event-a chocolate sale. When Jerry refuses to be bullied into selling chocolates, he becomes a hero, but his defiance is a threat to Archie, the Virgils, and the school. In the inevitable showdown, Archie's skill at intimidation turns Jerry from hero to outcast, to victim, leaving him alone and terribly vulnerable.

Mr. Midshipman Hornblower

by Cecil Scott Forester
This is the first book in The Horatio Hornblower Series, (but was the sixth written).
"Hornblower series. I just ordered "Ship of the Line" and "Beat to Quarters" along with the companion. This is one of the most enjoyable, page-turning series I have ever read! I read one of the books in a sitting and none so far has lasted more than a week. Like most of the other reviewers, I got started with the A&E series. Do yourself a favor and get the companion from the start. Hornblower, without a doubt, reflects the personality traits of people I know-honorable, self-critical, confused, alternately depressed/ecstatic, reflective, etc. His vigorous actions and direct approach despite uncertainty is so refreshing! It is the epitome of the philosophy "I'm not quite sure of exactly what to do, but moving forward with gusto beats the hell out of standing around!" I have found myself laughing out loud on several occasions! Hornblower's characteristics reflect those of successful real-life naval officers I have known and read about. If you are looking for some enjoyable, accurate, and adventuresome reading, you're in for a good time! (I gave THIS book 4 stars, but some other books in the series are definitely 5.)" A. Cain from Norfolk, Virginia.
"Great literature? It depends on how you define the term... It irks me to see people say a book isn't great literature, and then say, "But..." If a book excites you, if it entertains you, if it's well-written, well-constructed, then why isn't it great literature? Simply because it's an adventure novel? Please! Some of the best writing occurs in genres that get no respect because they aren't "literary" in the classical sense of the term. Well, Jane Austen's work was pop fiction in its day. Oh, don't get me started. Anyway, the entire Hornblower series is, imho, great literature because it meets the above criteria. Forester is great at crafting his books, and he offers more than just an adventure. Read these books! You won't be sorry." A reader from Greeley, CO.

Captain Horatio Hornblower

Year: 1951
US Rating: NR
Starring: Gregory Peck, Virginia Mayo.
Director: Raoul Walsh
"Exciting, well-produced sea epic based on C. S. Forester's British naval hero of the Napoleonic wars." Leonard Maltin, Signet / Penguin Putnam, Inc.
"Hornblower - Maybe the best adventure ever seen on screen. I saw "Captain Horatio Hornblower" for the first time when I was ten years old. Sometimes when you're going to see a movie of your long gone youth, you do it only on sentimental matters. My feelings on this movie are quite different, because it is quite a millenium movie. A lot of swashbuckling movies are funny, but unconscious (bad special effects etc). But this movie is,according to the time, nearly perfect, good special effects, very good british actors and especially Gregory Peck as Hornblower, the prototype for so many other heroes in later shot pictures. Unfortunately I do not have a VHS PAL version of the film, otherwise I would watch the movie more often than today. Watch the film, because it is thrilling, "armed" with the typically british understatement and humour. At least is the picture as romantic as you expect when you see those quite nice technicolor color! I think it is, besides the "Three Musketeers" with Gene Kelly, the most interesting movie for every sentimental, romantic and humorous adventurer. So take it, it will be the right choice!..." A viewer from Gelsenkirchen, Germany.
"Perhaps my all-time favorite movie. This Napoleanic era British Royal Navy yarn presents a wealth of action, loyalty, bravery, a glimpse of self-doubt, and even romance. Captain Hornblower, played exceptionally well by Gregory Peck, is a competent, intensely loyal and obedient British naval officer. He is a master teacher to junior officers and a leader of his men. We get a glimpse, though, of self-doubt that he carries with him (note the scenes where he writes in his diary). During the film he carries out an ultra-secret mission for the admiralty. In the course of that assignment Hornblower finds himself obliged to conduct a running ship to ship battle protrayed via top-notch movie footage. During the months it takes for Horblower's ship to return to Portsmouth, romance is nipped in the bud because of Hornblower's great integrity. The temptation is there, presented by the beautiful Virginia Mayo, but Hornblower doesn't buckle. Early successes bring advancement and notariety to Hornblower as the movie progresses. If you are inclined at all toward great tales of the sea and the men who sailed them, this movie will provide you with a grand adventure. Top notch, 5 stars all the way." Alan R. Holyoak from North Manchester, Indiana.
"THE GREATEST SWASHBUCKLER IN HISTORY This movie has it all. Action,Romance,Tragedy, with a lovely Virginia Mayo to spice it up. It remains true to one of the greatest authors of all time and allows Gregory Peck to use his understated acting style to perfection. So much so it competes favorably to his oscar winning turn as "Atticus" in "To Kill a Mockingbird". Raoul Walsh is simply the greatest ever at fiming this genre. This movie is fifty years old and the quality of everything involved makes it better than the day it was released." Jeffrey R Bednar from Kaneohe, Hawaii, United States.
"Rule Britania. Britania rules the seas. It's great when a book you love is made into a film that is also excellent. C S Forester wrote something like twelve books about "Captain Horatio Hornblower". So it must have been difficult to choose which part of Hornblower's life to dramatize in film. In the end, the screenwriter, Ivan Goff, chose to use two novels and this is quite apparent in the film. It could easily be two short films shown back to back. Far from being a flaw, it makes for twice the value. Forester wrote Hornblower as a strong, courageous, moral man who is plagued by self-doubt. His role in life however, as a commander at sea during the Napoleonic Wars, forces him to hide any internal qualms. In fact, he often takes more risks in order to hide his fear, than an otherwise fearless man would. Thus a legend is born because Hornblower is an inherently competent man. His successes far outweigh any temporary setbacks and his men are totally loyal as a result. In the film, we only get a glimpse of his thoughts through a daily ritual entering significant events into his diary. From this we can start to appreciate the fine line he walks between duty and humanity. Gregory Peck was the perfect choice for a role like this. He exudes leadership and yet underneath the rocky exterior of his Captaincy we are allowed to see the caring man. A man who knows the name of his lowliest crewman and can remember how the ships young midshipman said goodbye to his mother at port. The admiralty needed just such a man to accomplish a very difficult mission. To distract Napoleon's ally, Spain, from the fighting in Europe, a revolution needed to be started in South America. The fact that it was seven months sailing and the revolutionary leader was insane just made the victory more sweat. But pride goeth... In the course of wooing the mad "El Supremo", Hornblower captures a Spanish ship of the line, with almost twice his own guns. This prize was to be used by the South Americans to spearhead into all the coastal towns. Sadly it is some days later that news arrives that Spain and England had become allies. It would now be up to Hownblower, his crew and his ship, the badly overmatched Lydia, to retake the Spanish ship by the quickest possible means. At this point the Captain's life is immeasurably complicated by the arrival of Lady Barbara Wellesley, who is escaping the yellow fever in Panama. As we are soon to learn, Hornblower is already married and Lady Barbara is engaged to a Rear Admiral. None of this prevents them from falling in love. There is so much more to the story that I can't hope to describe it all. Hopefully, those that haven't seen it, will track down a copy of this powerful movie. It's one of the finest Naval films ever made and some of Gregory Peck's best work." Tony Hinde from Sydney, Australia.

Horatio Hornblower - The Adventure Continues

Year: 2001
Rated: NR
Director: Andrew Grieve
Move over, Mr. Darcy, A&E has a new heartthrob. He's third lieutenant Horatio Hornblower (Ioan Gruffudd reprising his star-making role), C.S. Forester's swashbuckling hero of the high seas. Devotees of the original Emmy Award-winning miniseries will want to "have at" this boxed set containing two feature-length episodes in which the dashing Hornblower and crew engage in "foolhardy actions, rash judgments, and irresponsible adventures." "Mutiny" finds our young hero awaiting trial for "black bloody mutiny" against a once distinguished, but increasingly unhinged Captain Sawyer (David Warner). "It was for the good of the service," Hornblower insists to his mentor, Sir Edward Pellew (Robert Lindsay). "We were headed for disaster." Hornblower relates the events that led him to a Kingston, Jamaica, prison cell. In "Retribution," Hornblower's trial unfolds, and the events surrounding the mutiny are further revealed: Captain Sawyer is detained in a straitjacket, disgruntled crew members desert, dithering acting captain Butland assumes command, and Hornblower leads a surprise attack on a Spanish fort. Meanwhile, the judges look for a scapegoat "to take away the smell." Maritime buffs will have a merry time, with all the shipboard intrigue and skirmishes. Like the "hot shot" that disables an escaping enemy vessel, this boxed set will be "a palpable hit." Donald Liebenson. DVD set - 2 discs, Region 1, $29.96, ASIN: B00005B1VL Order,

The Making of C.S. Forester's Horatio Hornblower

by Tom McGregor Horatio Hornblower, young midshipman and gallant hero of C. S. Forester's epic novels, arrives as a raw recruit in Nelson's navy, but is destined to rise through the ranks. Amidst a wealth of bloody sea battles, he proves himself courageous in danger and resilient intimes of trouble. The Making of C. S. Forester's Horatio Hornblower is a fascinating account of how Forester's much--loved fictional hero was brought to the screen to create one of the most ambitious and lavish productions on TV. Filled with in-depth interviews with the stars and crew, The Making of C. S. Forester's Horatio Hornblower captures the excitement and complexities of filming in its two foreign locations, the Crimea and Portugal. It contains more than 100 full-color photographs and illustrations charting all stages of production and shows exactly how navy life in the Napoleonic era was re-created through authentic costumes, makeup, sets, naval design, and special effects. It also gives an exclusive insight into the building of the HMS Indefatigable--a 125-foot, 22-cannon replica of a 1750s vessel, and the first British frigate to be handcrafted from wood in the last 140 years. Containing background historical information as well as on-set anecdotes and a behind-the-scenes look at key action sequences, The Making of C. S. Forester's Horatio Hornblower is essential reading for all of Forester's Hornblower fans.
"Wonderful behind-the-scenes story of a fabulous miniseries! I first decided to watch A&E's Horatio Hornblower because I had caught a glimpse of Ioan Gruffudd, and thought he was very handsome. But, as I watched, I got caught up in the movie, and thoroughly enjoyed the whole series. Then, when I learned there was a behind-the-scenes book availiable, I knew I had to have it. I tried all the local bookstores (and some not so local, too) with no luck. Then I tried Amazon, and I finally got my book. It is a great book, with loads of candid pictures and still frames from the filming of the series. I enjoyed learning how all the battle scenes were filmed, about the use of scale models, and all the hard work put into the filming of Horatio Hornblower. I would definately recommend this book to anyone who liked the series. It is a wonderful, informative, and captivating look at the behind-the-scenes action of the best miniseries I have ever seen, Horatio Hornblower." Trisha Walters from Peshtigo, Wisconsin.
Behind-the-Scenes Glimpse of the Hornblower Movies! If you enjoyed the adventures of Horatio Hornblower shown on television in April, you'll love this fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the making of the four movies. The author includes chapters on the location shoots in the Ukraine and Portugal, construction of the "Grand Turk" (one of the ships used in filming), interviews with the principal cast members, and synopses of each movie. Throughout is wonderful information on the genesis of the project, the complexities of shooting in multiple locations, historical accuracy, special effects, casting, and adapting the Forester books into screenplays. McGregor writes in a relaxed conversational style that is very readable. The chapter on filming in the Ukraine and the difficulties encountered there by cast and crew is most interesting. The book contains numerous photographs and illustrations in full color. The Making of Horatio Hornblower is a must-have book if you loved the movies or own the videos. I highly recommend it." A reader from Seattle, Washington.
"Sparkling behind-the-scenes tales from an TV epic. For anyone who loved A&E's "Horatio Hornblower" four-movie series, this is the book for you. With tons of color photos and the dry wit of British writer MacGregor, this is an information-packed volume that takes you behind the scenes, telling you exactly how they filmed all those realistic-looking ship battles. There are interviews with each of the major stars (particularly good ones with up-and-coming Welsh actor Ioan Gruffudd, who fits perfectly into the role of young Hornblower, and the wonderful Robert Lindsay, unforgettable as gruff-but-kindly Captain Pellew). Anyone who is a fan of the Hornblower novels, as I am, must have been a little fearful of what TV would do to our beloved hero -- but this mini-series of epic movies did both Horatio and C.S. Forester proud. I imagine C.S. is sitting on his cloud somewhere, smiling because a whole new generation is now going to discover Horatio Hornblower. Three cheers for A&E -- and definitely read this book!" A reader from Los Angeles.
