Emery Point Lighthouse

This is Emery Point Lighthouse. It is on Emery Point, now within the Larrakeyah Barracks near Cullen Bay. This is the north-west of the Darwin city centre.

All photographs were taken using a Praktica MTL3 (SLR camera) with a 500mm mirror lens or a Fuji 50mm, f1.4 lens. The film was Kodak 400 Colour Print Film.

Side / Rear
This is rear / side of the light taken just after we left the wharf.
FrontThis is the front of the light. You can see that it is surrounded by a number of trees a similar height to the light.
Wide view
Taken on the way back, this is shows the fairly low, crumbly cliffs typical of the region.

How do I see this light?

This light is located on a military base, so direct access is restricted. For about $20, you take a return trip on the Mandorah Ferry. Mandorah is across the harbour entrance, on the Cox Penninsula. While it is about 15 minutes by water, it is a very significant distance by road. The ferry leaves from Cullen Bay, just to the north west of Darwin CBD.

The timetable is available or the NT Government website at: http://www.dpi.nt.gov.au/whatwedo/busandferry/ferry/index.html or the company's site at: http://www.seacat.com.au/

Darwin Skyline
This is the wharf at Mandorah. There is a carpark on the left, for Cox Peninsula residents, etc. Below the covered waiting area on the end are several "flights" of stepped decking to allow for the extreme tides.

The only business within easy walking distance of the wharf is the Mandorah Beach Hotel.

Warning!

Note that, all year around, and especially from October to May, there are marine stingers / jelly fish in these waters. The stings are mind-bendingly painful, and potentially fatal. There may also be crocodiles - and not just on the menu!
