Choose Life

by Big Tent Revival
A JVB Bestseller!
'Earning a Grammy nomination for every album released isn't too shabby a track record. That's why it shouldn't surprise most that Big Tent Revival's fourth recording, Choose Life, is another giant leap forward for this quintet with the Midas touch. The album deftly captures the group's deepening maturity in both spirituality and songwriting abilities. You can't help but get caught up in the feel-good, bouncy flow of rockers like "Livin' Off Your Love" and "Fill Me with Your Spirit," each a likely radio hit. Yet the group can change pacing, as with the title track, a yearnful, poignant ballad, and the softly melodic "This Is the Word of God." The release ends on a wild, rowdy note with the Christmas rave-up "That's What I Want for Christmas." Indeed, there is an air of sophistication, a comfort zone if you will, that BTR appears to have reached on Choose Life. It's safe to say this is the band's finest hour.' Michael Lyttle.

Underdog

Audio Adrenaline
A JVB Bestseller!
'Having broken out of the shadow of DC Talk, Audio Adrenaline has truly evolved into a band locked into their own sound, and they shine like the sun on the band's fifth studio album. With Underdog, they maintain their humility through musical discipleship, but that doesn't preclude the band from having fun--their sound is now distilled to an infectious guitar and keyboard-sweetened rock with enough heaviness and soul to temper the tender sentiments rendered. The title cut, fuzzy, rhythmic rock & roll with rough edges, is one that'll get stuck in your head for days. "DC-10," long part of the band's repertoire, makes an appearance here, rockabilly-style. Jennifer Knapp's poignantly rendered guest vocals add just the right touch to the scratch-and-loop-laden treatment of the hymn "It is Well with My Soul," and "Get Down" is a radio friendly gem that'll have listeners bouncing around like mad.' Paige La Grone.

King Of Fools

Delirious
'In addition to its message of all-out, headlong surrender to the Gospel, Delirious's first widely accessible album also has just plain old good music. Often described as the "new U2," Delirious's resemblance is not hard to detect. Martin Smith's vocals, like Bono's, are far ranging and have a captivating, heart-wrenching emotionalism. The band as a whole has a kind of reckless innovation that consistently surges into stunning new territory. On King of Fools, for instance, the presence of a violin, a choir, and a Rickenbacker in one song is not an unusual combination, and the use of every kind of guitar in existence seems to be their specialty. Anyone would agree that Delirious is casting a mold of their own. Their hunger for God is strenuous and explores the depths of all struggles: the longing for more of Him and developing the patience to wait, the struggle for belief when "blood rolls down upon our land" and when love spills "down that wooden cross" ("White Ribbon Day"), and the struggle when the gifts He brings "rob [our] innocence" ("King or Cripple"). In every song, the tension eventually culminates in a contemplation of the Cross--as when in "All the Way" Smith erupts, "with you I'm washed as white as the snow and all crimson stain becomes as a shadow"--and the effect is only more stirring. Never has an album had so much rock and so much passion; listen and you'll be hungry for more.' Courtenay Kehn.
Included the awsome track, "History Maker".

"FIVE STARS ISN'T CLOSE TO ENOUGH FOR THIS CD! I am a young Christian and I've never been into Christian music. But once I started listening to this CD, I totally fell in love with it. Its fun, upbeat songs, such as "All things are possible" and "Can't stop talking" always bring a smile to my face when I listen to them. Some of the other songs, such as "The Potter's Hand" (which is the best song on the cd) and "Breathe on me", have beautiful lyrics that glorify Christ. I love to praise the Lord day after day with every single song. I listen to it every day, and I now that I am praising God so often, I feel I'm starting to become closer to Him. Every time I listen to this CD, I can feel the annointing and the presence of the Holy Spirit. I'm sure this awesome cd will touch you profoundly. I really recommend this cd to EVERYONE, trust me, it's worth every cent!" A music fan from Philly.
"Shout to the Lord 2000. Great for praise and worship. Very uplifting" Pearl Lemdal from Canada.
"This is what you call AWESOME! This album is so exciting that you will sing, dance, laugh and cry to God. The songs are so annointed that'll bring you to His' presence. "My thoughs in the album "I believe the promises". Every hillsong CDs are simply great. I never regret buying any of them...Because all the songs are inspiring, especially for those in a worship team. I first got hold of the album I believe the promise after listening to Touching heaven Changing and it was FANTASTIC. In every cd, there is always a new song. The songs Glory To The King & Jesus Lover Of My Soul in this album are very comforting,Shout To The Lord allows you to really shout and Praise God`s name and All Things Are Possible is very gd in times of impossible situation, it helps you to rejoice and know that God is there and with HIM all things are possible. I DID NOT buy hillsong cds because I idolised Darlene and her worship team BUT because the worship songs in Touching heaven Changing Earth album touch my life NOT because of the composer or anything like that but the holy spirit touch me in this special way to dwell deeper into God`s love. Darlene is a very annoited leader, when she took 3 nights of worship session here in Singapore in our Festival of Praise, The Lord use her in a special way to set the feet of THOUSANDS into dancing." Leona Wong from Singapore.
"More songs I liked than on any Christian CD I have heard. Powerful Praise and Worship music." A music fan from US.
"One of the best cd's around. This cd is one of the most prophetic praise and worship tapes along with the Shout to the Lord by Hosanna Integrity that has ever been put out. It speaks to the nations. Creation is groaning for the manifestation of the sons of God and I believe that this cd is causing the body of Christ to hear the cry. I have never heard a more dynamic worship leader who can truly worship in spirit and in truth. I will visit their church one day." A music fan from Cedartown, Georgia.
"You will want to give this one to saved and unsaved friends! I bought this CD four months ago, never having heard of the worship leader or of Hillsong music. I wanted to hear what someone with my first name could do. I was not disappointed, Darlene is truly annointed of God and her music has blessed me far beyond my expectations! I have since bought this CD, tape and video and given to both saved and unsaved friends. Don't miss this one, it's the best of the Hillsong CD's. You will sing along with joy and cry tears of happiness as you forget your earthly trials and step into the presence of God!" Darlene Herod from California, USA.

All That You Can't Leave Behind

U2
Tracks: Beautiful Day, Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of, Elevation, Walk On, Kite, In a Little While, Wild Honey, Peace on Earth, When I Look at the World, New York, Grace.
"If U2 hadn't used the title already, "A Sort of Homecoming" might have suited this, their 10th studio album. All That You Can't Leave Behind sounds, at various points, like any or all of U2's previous albums, as if the band is sending postcards back from a protracted ramble through previously conquered territories. The euphoric opening track, "Beautiful Day," reintroduces Edge's signature delay-laden guitar, which has been pretty much absent since The Unforgettable Fire. Elsewhere, the gospel stylings of Rattle and Hum resurface on "Stuck in a Moment," and the deranged, Prodigy-influenced dance textures that characterized 1997's Pop crop up on "Elevation." None of which suggest that this commendably restless bunch is running out of ideas. Having spent the '90s making three of the most bizarre and adventurous albums ever delivered by a stadium-rock band (the consecutive masterpieces Achtung Baby, Zooropa, and Pop), it's as if they're now trying to figure out what is the one particular thing they've always done best. Based on the evidence presented here, their forte remains a facility for making the epic statement alongside Bono's increasing lyrical intimacy: "Walk On" and "Peace on Earth" are two of the best things he's ever written or sung. All That You Can't Leave Behind confirms that U2's laurels are still making them itch." Andrew Mueller.
"An excellent addition to a great body of work. There are U2 listeners under the mistaken impression that U2 is The Joshua Tree, and that everything after that was untrue to their image. Then there are those that realize that The Joshua Tree was just one of the many images the band has employed throughout their career, and was never meant to be permanent. They have continually evolved their sound through the years. To listeners of Boy and October, the U2 of The Joshua Tree was commercial and a divergence from their true self. To listeners of The Joshua Tree, the U2 of Pop was commercial and divergent from their true self. Then there are those that realize that the songs are always the same: it's how the band plays them that changes." Paul Gunther from Simi Valley, CA, USA.
"How does U2 play those songs on "All That You Can't Leave Behind"? Very well.
[Selected quotes from the review of each song.]
"Stuck In a Moment You Can't Get Out Of": A Motown-flavored ballad. A song about suicide; or, rather, suicide prevention. About realizing that wherever you are at right now, you won't be there forever. Every moment ends. This feeling you're feeling now won't always be there. Also a likely single, because the lyrics are dichotomous enough that it sounds like a straightforward love song. Should find the same audience that doesn't realize that "Every Breath You Take" is about stalking.
"Elevation": ...Would make a great show opener...
"Kite": Probably my favorite song on the album. Flying away, floating on a leisurely breeze like a kite in the wind, is the metaphor. Just go with the wind. You can't control it, so just learn to enjoy it.
"In a Little While": An unusual little number for the band, with a great guitar lick by Edge kicking off a sweet song about missing someone; about being able to stop and enjoy missing someone.
"Peace on Earth": Another straightforward song. With a title like this, it's hard to mistake what it's about, but it does contain some of the most meaningful lyrics Bono's ever written. A reminder to those who make the mistake that U2 left behind their care for the world with Zooropa and Pop. It's always been there; they just stopped beating people over the head about it.
Though more mellow than most of their albums, there is a lot here to listen to. One of the best albums the band has produced in their career, and certainly one of the best albums of the year."
"Awesome entry into the 21st Century. I must say that this is there most brilliant work since Achtung Baby. Every decade at least one album stands out like Joshua Tree of the '80's and Achtung Baby in the 90's. I am an avid, fanatical fan of theres and I find myself once again emerged into this album. There music has a way of piercing one's soul. Track's 1,3,4,5,8,and 9 are incredibly awesome. I can't wait for the tour!! If you are a true U2 fan and not stuck in the early 80's still (expand your horizon's old schoolers) you'll really enjoy this album. Bar none they are the greatest group in the world!" U2
Tracks: Beautiful Day, Summer Rain, Always.
"Congradulations! On a new hit record. I do not know where to begin. Perhaps, it is due to the fact that I have been a fan for this group for some time. The video is outstanding. I have seen it many times. And I have enjoyed it more than once. Deriving pleasure and satisfaction each time I see it, again! You are so famous that I feel I know each one of you, personally-even though I live in the States. You,easily take the listener or viewer on a journey into your world with admirable artistic effort. Many of the other European bands are doing equally well. (Including Duran Duran and the Rolling Stones). As an avid Music lover I am glad to see a competative spirit generated by the members of our generation. Music compliments our every effort. When it is done well- it can satisfy even our ambitions: on every level. Thank-you for successfully bringing your beautiful music to my country - The United States Of America." Mr.Matthew Fisk Duckman from NYC, USA.
"It's a Beautiful Single. OK, the single is great, but who buys a single when you're going to buy the full CD anyway? ...either to get an alternate radio edit ("... Wild Horses" or "Last Night on Earth"), to get live tracks, or to get the b-sides... In this case, it's the b-sides, and here's where this package shines. U2 has added two great b-sides that aren't live recordings. "Summer Rain" is U2 doing their best immitation of Oasis (or does Oasis immitate U2?). From the accoustic guitar to Bono's inflections in the bridge and chorus, you can here faint whisperings of "Go Let It Out", "Wonderwall", "Staring at the Sun", etc. "Always", from what I've read, is an early, more punk incarnation that became "Beautiful Day". It sounds like "Even Better than the Real Thing" meets "Beautiful Day", in the way that the versus are played and sung, and the guitar on the chorus almost exactly duplicating "Beautiful Day". A great addition to anyone's U2 singles collection. That is, until they release their next Greatest Hits CD and add these to an extra disc." A music fan from Somerset, MA, United States.
"B-sides are as good as it gets. If you are a U2 fan, this single should be bought. Always sounds like another version of Beautiful Day (when you hear it you will understand) and Summer Rain is a very simple tune that has that classic U2 feel. Don't leave this album behind, continue your U2 collection." A music fan from USA.
"Good for serious U2 fans. "Beautiful Day" is a good song, certainly destined to be a classic. This time, it appears that they have not taken a misstep with regard to choosing the first single (as they did with "Numb" and "Discotheque"). The b-sides are worth the buy for the serious U2 fans or those who end up really liking 'All That You Can't Leave Behind.'
"Summer Rain" is an infectious tune that, with a tad bit more work on the lyrics, could have been more than a b-side.
"Always" is an interesting b-side for the same reason that "Lady with a Spinning Head" (from the 'Achtung Baby' sessions) was. That is, as others have pointed out, this song sounds like an early (or later) manifestation of "Beautiful Day" with the similarities in the music. The chorus a la Mr. Roboto is kinda fun as well." A music fan from Portland, Oregon.

The Joshua Tree

U2
Tracks: Where The Streets Have No Name, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, With Or Without You, Bullet The Blue Sky, Running To Stand Still, Red Hill Mining Town, In God's Country, Trip Through Your Wires, One Tree Hill, Exit, Mothers Of The Disappeared.
"U2's most successful album (their first No. 1 album and the 1987 Grammy award-winner for Album of the Year) is also their most dour. From the stark, black and white cover photography, with U2 looking like missionaries (or at least M*A*S*H extras), to the existential angst at the heart of each track, The Joshua Tree is one long, atmospheric wail at the abyss. Producers Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois turn in an austere production that heightens the drama substantially." Rob O'Connor.
"You HAVE found what you're looking for... I will be quite surpirised if the current reader of this review does not already have this album. Oh well, if not. Nobody's perfect, eh? This is U2's best effort and one of the greatest albums of all time. As, influential now as its release in 1987, U2 never have been able to match the impact that they made with this disc. Rolling Stone in their edition that recapped the 1980's placed this as the decade's third best album. As high as that position may imply, it isn't enough. The #1 spot went to The Clash. The difference between the two bands is one was loved and listened to in the 80's. The other is timeless. I used to think that the first three songs on this album (Where the Streets Have No Name, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, and With or Without You) were the only songs I needed to survive. But other than these rather played-out classics, the listener will find a listening-haven in the album as a whole that bests most other major releases. Like the revolutionary "Bullet the Blue Sky," a little ironic tale about our own red, white and blue. Perhaps not the most national-friendly tune, but great music non-the-less. Also the slow love-ballad that is "Running to Stand Still," has always been a U2 fan favorite. The majesty of "In God's Country" is an overlooked secret, matching anything they had done to that point. And my personal favorite, "One Tree Hill." There's not a bad track on the disc. Before all the fascination by the band to make a concept album, before Bono lost his marbles in his own political views, before they could recapture their own potential and fame with this year's great release "All That You Can't Leave Behind," the band's serious achievement and global attention started here. All great bands have a climax, a point that made them better than anything they had been previously. For Led Zeppelin, it was "IV." For Pink Floyd, "Dark Side." The Beatles? "Revolver." "The Joshua Tree" is simply U2's reply to all of those albums, contending that they too deserved names next to the bands they had once idolized and the rest of the music world was emulating. This album leaves nothing to be desired." Janson Kemp from SLC, UT, USA.
"The Classic Album of a Generation. This is the only album I ever owned in which I wore out the vinyl copy AND the cassette and so had to get it on CD. I was always a U2 fan going back to "War" and "The Unforgettable Fire", but I know that a lot of people see this as their watershed album which, of course, it was. However, I also think the more recent U2 albums have been unfairly compared to this one, which if you think about it is silly since we should appreciate bands that don't stick with a successful formula just because it works and this album is as much of a departure from U2's early work as "Pop" is from this one. All that aside, this is why you should own this CD:
1) The production of Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno - listen to "Where The Streets Have No Name" and "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" with headphones and you'll hear what sonic layering can be in the hands of masters.
2) An uncanny match of lyrics and music - in the liner notes it says that "One Tree Hill" was written upon a friend's death. I would like to think that if I were ever in a similar situation I could come up with something that would evoke half the emotion that song does.
3) No bad spots - when was the last time you bought an album that was completely listenable all the way through?
I do think it's a shame that U2 has not been able to recapture the overall karma of this album in their subsequent years (not that they haven't tried) but I think the biggest testament to this album is that I have bought it for friends and relatives ranging in age from 45 to 17 and they all love it. That's one awesome album. Dan Friedman from New York, NY.
"Nice. I very good album from U2. I mean A CLASSIC one. U2 are the best!" A music fan from One Tree Hill Town.
"Excellent. I think Bono is a pedantic, self-important windbag. However, I must give credit where credit is due. U2's "Unforgettable Fire" tour was one of the most amazing live performances I ever saw, and "Joshua Tree" is an all-time classic. Haunting, catchy, atmospheric, moving." David Bonesteel from Fresno, CA.

"Definately worth buying. This album is a wonderful instrumental tribute to U2. The blend of balads, such as "With or Without You" and "All I Want is You" is complemented by powerful versions of "Sunday Bloody Sunday" and "New Year's Day." Using only string instruments and occasional percussion, this album does many interesting rendtions. Check out "Desire", which is both funky and passionate, there's some great stuff here." A listener from NY.
"Tribute albums: pain, joy and not a little risk! Tribute albums always represent a risk for both the artists involved and the prospective purchaser. Too much interpretation will destroy the connection with the original music and musicians; not enough interpretation and the musicians are simply regurgitating someone else's work. This album straddles that fine line, only slipping occasionally. These are strong, well-educated musicians executing music that is for many of us the backdrop tapestry that has added a painfully and sublimely rich texture and color to our lives. The trouble often comes, in translating pop music through a classically trained musician's hand, when the artists don't have enough experience with the extreme way pop music breathes in time. Occasionally their phrasing sounds stilted, too tight, really, but at others this quartet nails the essence of what drives the music of our Irish brothers. As both a pop and classically trained musician, I applaud their efforts. It's worth a listen, at least, and for those of us whose tastes span the great divide of music, worthy of adding to the collection." Steven R. Farley from Drain, OR, USA.
Quite fun. I love U2, and would consider myself a die hard fan. I have read many reviews, and the general consensus is that it was terrible. i on the other hand, loved it. i thought it was very fun, and quite interesting. The CD is one that I, as well as my whole family, can listen to. If you love U2 or hate U2, there is still a lot of talent on this cd, and it is very good." A music fan from Chicago, IL USA.
"Not Bad. Having listened to the symphonic tribute to U2 (and being thoroughly disappointed) I almost didn't pick this up. But I did, and I was not nearly as disappointed. Actually, I was pleasantly surprised. While this CD is definately not for everyone (I imagine there's a lot of U2 fans who will get this simply because they are U2 fans and will only listen to it once), it was not bad. Not bad at all. The string quartet arrangements of the familiar songs had a strange effect -- very eery, weird. If you like the mood set by Elvis Costello's "Juliet Letters", you'll like this CD." Avery from US.

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Plays U2

Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
Tracks: Pride (In The Name Of Love), Even Better Than The Real Thing, Desire, Sunday Bloody Sunday, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, One, Angel Of Harlem, When Love Comes To Town, New Year's Day, Two Hearts Beat As One, Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses, All I Want is You.
"You know the game where for hoots and hollers you sing rock songs in your most formal operatic voice? Well, U2 as interpreted by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is more than a bit like that. And if you can get past your no-way-Jose, better-than-the-real-thing snorts and guffaws, hats off to you. There are small rewards for doing so: "One" swings with a jazzy groove; the classical guitar that opens "Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses" is delicate and lovely; and the brass is stunning on "Angel of Harlem." But better to have strayed further from the originals (even the finest of the batch, the rework of "All I Want is You"), the collection is so mild that it rouses little more than idle appreciation and irreverent giggles." Paige La Grone.
"A dissagreement with the masses, a great CD. I picked up this CD a the other day and was extremely impressed. I like U2, but am not a die hard fan and have not memorized these songs note for note, I am however framiliar with them. I loved the instumentation and RPO's slight new twist on the music. I agree with another reccomendation that I read on Amazon saying that they managed to effectivley caputre the spirit of the music. This CD was wonderful to me I sat and listed to it over and over the first day I got it, however I don't reccomend it for die hard U2 fans that can't stand their music to sound even a bit diffrent than the original." "Zoovenir: Only for the hardcore fan...but he'll like it. I bought Zoovenir mostly because it seemed like a nice finishing touch for my collection. It's better than a lot of U2 singles, but it doesn't even come close to any of the albums. You wouldn't want to consider Zoovenir unless you really love U2. Not to say that it's bad, but you wouldn't really like it unless you love these 12 songs. I mean, nobody does U2 better than U2, so don't expect anything on Zoovenir to knock your socks off. Some of the tracks are really fun. "Fun" is a good word to describe Zoovenir because you've heard these songs before, now you're just hearing a differentĐand interestingĐversion. I'll go in the order of the CD. Streets is probably the best on the CD. It sounds remarkably like the original, but it's acoustic. Good opening, and the singer, Tom Nordahl, has a good voice. Almost a country twang, but that's probably the result of his Swedish accent. (The CD is made in Sweden; most of the bands are Swedish and some are British) Sharp Kiddie does a really original Even Better Than The Real Thing. It has a strong techno influence, but they throw in a harmonica too. Yes, it sounds good. The CD opens well with these tracks. Mysterious Ways...it's alright, it's alright, alright....although the chorus does sound good. However, this track ain't too great. With Or Without You by Apocolypse Cow is strong. It sounds very familiar to the original, but a little heavier. The electric guitar is prevalent throughout, which sounds nice, although the vocalist can't touch Sir Bono. One by Straitjackets has got to the funniest on the CD. Basically, Straitjackets sound like some kind of Punk band, and the singer sounds exactly like Gavin Friday of Bush. I never thought that One could become a hardcore track, but they're done it here. Very high energy. Sunday Bloody Sunday by Liar is very mediocre. It sounds a lot like the original. But obviously, it's not the original, therefore it's not so great. Bullet The Blue Sky on Zoovenir sounds less like the original than any other cover on the disc. Exit puts an original touch on it, with lots of distorted guitar. Interesting. The Fly by Blake Carringtons is AOK. The tempo has speeded up, and the guitar in the start sounds good (although it's not like the very unique "Fly" sound) Not so bad. Not so good. Inbetweendays sounds awful. Their cover of Pride does no justice to the song. They sound like they belong nowhere but the Expresso Bar. So soft you can barely hear it. I bet MLK Jr. would cry if he heard this. Worst on the album. Groove Tunnel, despite their great name, turns in basically a carbon copy of Hold Me Thrill Me...Okay, I suppose. The Chosen have done some cool stuff with I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For. A trumpet works its way in, and the pace of the lyrics is original. Good, but too bad that it's less than three minutes long Party Girl. It's a tough song to like. Automobile makes it even tougher. (The CD is 48:26 in length) Basically, Zoovenir is nothing special. It's fun, some of the stuff is original, and of course the songs are great. It definitely loses strength as it progresses. If you don't own the albums from which these songs are covered, get those before you get Zoovenir! Get the Best Of before you get Zoovenir. But if you're a big U2 fan, and there are lots of us out there, Zoovenir is well worth the 18 dollars. My rating of 3 stars is conservative. Obviously, I would give any U2 five stars...but compared to other U2, this is only a 3. (Reference: Joshua Tree and Achtung would be 5s, some of the bad singles would be 1s)" A music fan from Massachusetts.

"A must-have for 80's Metal fans. With the awesome song-writing of Michael Sweet, the phenomenal guitar playing of both himself and fellow guitarist Oz Fox, the cool bass licks of Tim Gaines, and steady beat of "visual time-keeper" Robert Sweet, all combined with a very positive message, we have in Stryper's Soldiers Under Command a very good rock album not just for Christian rock fans, but any fan of 80's glam rock/hair rock. I highly recommend this album to anyone wishing to find out what type of music Stryper put out back in their day..." Steven Walker from Tulare, CA.

To Hell With The Devil

Stryper
"Great metal vocalist!!! In response to Marc Butler's review. Just because these guys have a strong commitment to Christ, doesn't mean the MUSIC doens't have value. Agreed, most would prefer no political agenda tied to the music, but these guys were genuine, leave 'em alone and listen to the tunes. I am NOT a practicing christian, but I am a trained vocalist and former vocal coach, and if you like good metal singers, you should add this album to your collection. Micheal Sweet has arguably the most beautiful tenor voice in the genre'...... listen to the samples..... the tunes rock, are hook oriented, and even if your not a bible thumper, you will still find meaning in this recording......." Rob Lunte, Seattle, WA.
"Great 80's melodic hard rock, with a Rock-hard message. The Sweet brothers really crank it up on this one. "To Hell With The Devil" is not only a massively powerful metal song, but it is an "all out for God" assault. Oz Fox shreds on this one. With all of the hundreds of 80's hairbands that once ruled the earth, Stryper stood head and shoulders above the rest. This album will please any headbanger who just wants to crank it up and rock." Truth

Michael Sweet
Tracks:Distracted, All I'm Thinking Of (Is You), I Am Adam, Blue Bleeds Through, Wool & Chiffon, Save Me, Ever After, The, Tomorrow, Lift My Head, Truth, Achilles Heel, Stone.
"Sweet!! This is a quality CD. Not only is the music fresh and kickin', but the lyrics have something good, positive, and real to say. From rockers Achilles Heel & Save Me to wonderful ballads Stone & All I'm Thinking of is You that show off his wonderful voice to a couple of very different but very awesome songs I Am Adam & Blue Bleeds Through (this song in particular really shows off his vocal range), this album is SWEET indeed. If your looking for the second coming of Stryper (OZ Fox plays some guitar on this album), this isn't it. Only 1 or 2 songs have the feel of Stryper. This CD is all Michael Sweet and it has a very fresh sound to it. I recommend this CD to anyone who likes to rock and ain't afraid of something a little different." William R Goodwin, JR - "dragon678" from LIMA, OHIO, United States.
"Definitely the best Michael Sweet album! Like most of the other reviews posted here, I have to say this is the best music of Michael's solo career. He blends hard hitting rock with some mellower sounds to create a CD that has the potential to be HUGE!! The guitar sound on Save Me and I Am Adam is incredible, and the lyrics on Achilles Heel and Stone hit the mark without being "preachy." This CD runs the risk of being burned out in my CD player. Buy it, listen to it, and you'll enjoy it!" A music fan from Burke, VA, USA.
"Buy this album now! There was a quote from U2's Bono saying the singer hopes rock to overcome pop music. If Michael Sweet's latest album "Truth" is any indication, this could very well happen. This is the best rock album I've heard since Creed's "Human Clay." Forget about distinctions between religious and mainstream music, they don't apply here. Michael's message on this album is universal. He deals honestly with the loneliness and pain all of us experience at one point or another, but doesn't wallow in it, leaving the listener stuck in tragedy and heartache. He presents the problem and presents the solution in no uncertain terms, while avoiding some of the cheesier cliches and T-shirt slogans of earlier Stryper recordings. The music itself displays Michael's talent in ways no previous album of his own or Stryper ever did. Michael has parted ways with Stryper's glam rock, left behind the Bryan Adams texture of the first solo album, and turned up the volume from the Real album. This IS Michael Sweet!" Andrew Pottenger from Kansas City, Missouri, United States.
"AWESOME. This CD is without a doubt the best album of Michael's Solo Career. I won't compare it to any of the Stryper albums because the musical styles of Stryper versus this album are not comparable. This album has a wide range of musical styles and really shows off Michael's talented voice as well as his music writiing skills." Steve and Trina from Canton, MI, USA.

Unseen Power

Petra
"Unseen Power offers Petra with a few surprises: "Unseen Power" sees Petra eager to duplicate the sound and power of its earlier hit albums like "Beyond Belief" and "On Fire" while venturing into areas which will leave a few fans suprised. Most of the tracks are outstanding, including the opener "Destiny", the ZZ Topp-ish "Ready Willing and Able" and the very catchy "Dance." "Hey World", probably the best tune on the album, sees Petra dealing with the tough social issues of abortion and suicide, something they've rarely touched on before. However, the cheesy "Who'se on the Lord's Side" and the weak "Hand on my Heart" makes a classic album a four star one. While it admirable that they experiemented, some fans will be wondering if they are listening to a Petra song or a R&B ballad. It also seems that some of the songs were rushed, maybe out of deadline reasons ("Secret Weapon" and "Sight Unseen" seem thrown together at the last minute) This can be blamed on the poor production work of the Elephante brothers, which tells me that Petra perhaps needs a change of producers. It still doesn't diminish a solid, if not spectacular follow-up to Beyond Belief. Definetely a must for any Petra fan." Jason Miyares, Richmond, Va.

On Eagle's Wings

Michael Crawford with Maire Brennan
"Best known to American audiences for his long-running title role in the Broadway smash-hit Phantom of the Opera, Michael Crawford issued On Eagle's Wings as the predecessor to his Emmy-winning PBS special of 1998. Blessed with charisma and classically superlative pipes, Crawford does a nice turn with his collection of easy-listening sacred and inspirational tunes. Christians with a penchant for show tunes and flowery vocals will delight in Crawford's renditions of "Amazing Grace" (with additional vocals by Maire Brennan), "I'll Walk with God," and "Ave Maria." The Journey

Tommy Emmanuel
Tracks: Tailin The Invisible Man, Big Brother, Somethin's Goin' On, Hellos & Goodbyes, The Journey, If Your Heart Tells You To, Like Family, Don't Hold Me Back, Villa Anita, White Picket Fences, The Big Shell, Initiation.
"One of the three best tracks ever recorded. It's been, what, 6 years since this album was released. I still consider track 5 "The Journey" to be one of the 3 best EVER recorded, the other two being Stairway to Heaven and Classical Gas by Mason Williams. I defy anyone not to get chills down their spine when it gets to the crescendo at the end! The rest of the album is okay, and quite good in some parts, but it's the title track that blows my mind and makes the whole album worth purchasing." Durand Sinclair from Sydney, Australia.
"Another good album from a guitar master. Tommy Emmanuel has produced consistently good music since he began playing in pubs in Australia about 9 or 10 years ago. This album is no exception. His country style is reminiscent of Chet Atkins' work while his rock music is of fabulous quality. I can highly recommend any of Tommy's work. Too bad Amazon doesn't carry the complete collection. "Guitar Lover from Arizona. A guitar playing friend of mine introduced me to Tommy Emmanuel's The Journey CD about 5 yearsago, and it has been a staple in my listening diet ever since. I love great instrumental guitar work, and have CD's from Satriani, Johnson, Vai, and others. For pure listening pleasure, though, I always crank this one up. Try it, you'll love it!" A music fan from Arizona, USA.
"If you love & appreciate superb guitar music, get this CD! It doesn't matter what genre(s) you prefer, if you are a devotée of mind-boggling axemanship, you will be stunned by the genius of Tommy Emmanuel on this CD. I'm not easy to please, either. It took nothing less than the Hellecasters to convince me that instrumental music played by professional guitarists with vision was not a dying paradigm. And now there's Tommy. I first heard his music played over the sound system as walk-in music at a Kenny G concert mixed by the legendary Al Tucker, one of the greatest living live audio engineers. As usual, the system *sparkled*, and here's this unbelievable guitar work just blowing minds in super hi-fi. It was incredible! I ran up to Tucker and asked him "Who was that?!!!" He said "Tommy Emmanuel, an Australian guitarist, and you can't buy his CDs here in the States." That was then - this is now. Buy this CD before it goes out of print. "Invisible Man" has the wailing intensity of Larry Carlton's work on Steely Dan's "Don't Take Me Alive", with some great guest slide guitar by Joe Walsh. Abraham Laboriel's bass gives the whole piece incredible motion. The laid back groove in 'Big Brother" gives way to a bouncy chorus that counterbalances the bluesy tone and feel of the rest of the tune. Abraham Laboriel is back on "Somethin's Goin' On", and the tune captures a fascinating mix of vibes - see if doesn't take you a bunch of places that you haven't been since the 1970's - if you were around then. "Hellos & Goodbyes" is reminiscent of the more melodic and stately themes of Russ Freeman and The Rippingtons, with Tommy providing the same impeccably executed nylon-string guitar work you'd expect from Russ. The orchestral arrangement paints a lush backdrop for the solo sax of Dave Koz. To paraphrase cowboy poet Rob Blair, this tune will jerk tears out of a brass monkey. "The Journey" deserves to be the title track. I'm listening to it as I write this, and the hair on my arms is standing straight up on top of mile-high goosebumps. The whole CD would have been worth owning just for this track. If I had to pick one word for this tune, it would have to be majestic. It would be something incredible to see and hear this tune played live, mixed with this kind of production. Al Tucker could do it. What a phenomenal job of track selection to put "If Your Heart Tells You To" next in the lineup. Jeff "CJ" Vanston's piano is strung with heartstrings. This tune is sweet. "Like Family" is a pure skipping song. You're tripping along on a happy groove - and then watch out for the bridge - it explodes! And then just as suddenly, you're in a pure rhythm groove with island vibes, and it sets up for Tommy's sassy re-entry. You're not gonna believe "Don't Hold Me Back". You remember John Jorgenson's tour-de-force on "Orange Blossom Special" (The Return of the Hellecasters)? (The 'Casters always joke at the live gigs about that being their obligatory "fiddle tune".) This is in that league - this is as good as hot guitar ever gets. But with this tune, you really get the "fiddle". At the end, Tommy trades licks with violinist Jerry Goodman, and they had to have had fire extinguishers in the studio - the guys absolutely BURN on this one. 'Villa Anita" is Tommy's first outing with Chet Atkins - a tasty piece with some spectacular textures reminiscent of Erlend Krauser's imaginative production. A great tune. "White Picket Fences" will make you smile. What a stunning arrangement - a classic example of the "less is more" principle. If I hadn't mentioned the relatively sparse instrumentation (compared to the rest of the album), you'd never have noticed. You want pure rock 'n' roll? You got it in "The Big Swell". If they played this live, NO ONE would be sitting down, except the wheelchair guys, and they'd be rockin' too. This is pure energy, pure exuberance, pure simple raw energy. When they recorded it, they pulled the faders down, but I'll bet the band didn't stop. "Initiation" is a classic, brooding piece of acoustic steel string in reverberated, delayed, interplay with itself. One guitar can create and resolve a lot of tension. The album is eclectic - look it up in Webster's, as Derek Taylor used to say. It's good enough to study. If you love guitar, you'll love this album. If you're a guitar player, you have no excuse for not owning it...unless you're not serious about hearing the craft performed by one of the world's most able craftsmen. Tommy is high-class, first-rate -- any superlative you can think of misses the mark. Listen to this, and see for yourself." A music fan from Rowland Heights, California, USA.

"Awesome. Had the good fortune of seeing Tommy Live in NYC as a Opening act for Robbin Ford. He blew me away. He made one instrument sound like he had a 5 piece band behind him. Most incredible acoustic guitarist I've ever seen. The audiance was hypnotized. It was his first and as far as I know his only trip to the states... I went back the second night..and who did I run into but Sting...at the bar..we chatted a bit and he told me he was a big fan of Tommys and I believe a good friend. Was an increible night. This man is an unbelievable talent. Buy this and Journey you will be amazed." Bill Juliano from USA.
"As Good As Gold... Tommy Emmanuel is truly one of our greatest and most-talented contemporary guitarists. He hails from Australia, and is a long-time, devoted guitarplayer. A true master, as heard here, his memorable works include "Midnight Drive", "Villa De Martin", and his guitar rendition of Sting's "Fields of Gold". Wow! Creative and truly impressive!" Rozy Uziel from Sherman Oaks, CA.
"Good, clean, and up-beat guitar melodies! Excellent melodic guitar work. You can play it for hours and not get bored. Tommy has done a good job mixing Larry Carlton's style into "Can't Get Enough"; it sounds like the Larry of Steely Dan years. The "Villa De Martin" cut has two faces: feels like a Bob James piece and then moves into a Marc Antoine riff, definitely fresh! The rest of the CD is just as enjoyable." "Six Stars out of Five. I can't stop listening to this CD. An outstanding performance. After hearing the CD for the first time, I quietly put my Maton guitar back in it's case, and it's now gathering dust in the attic! It's a CD all guitarists will want to hear." David Norton-Smith from Australia.
Jeezly-Weezly! This would be the "If you only buy one CD this year....." collection to buy. I've already sent a dozen or so to friends. Note to guitarists worldwide.....resist the urge to quietly place your instrument in a closet after listening to this. Instead, think of this CD as a reminder of why we play! Every song on this package is very accessible...you needn't be a player to appreciate it. It's not simply a " Look what I can do! " project. You'll find unexpected, well crafted twists and turns every few moments. Boy, what a breath of fresh air!" Brian Doherty from Richmond, Va., USA.
"Excellent! Saw the life concert in Germany where Only was recorded and bought the latest CD immediatly. The CD is EXCELLENT, but hardly shows what this man can get out of a guitar. If you close your eyes while listening, you'll hear stories told by an impressive but soft, awesome but harmonic style which is Tommy Emmanuels only. His positive look onto life, his joy playing music can be felt throughout any single track on this CD. It is seldom, that a musician can pack his soul into songs like Tommy Emmanuel succeedes since 13 albums, topped by his latest: ONLY" Klaus Klöser from Germany.
"An absolute virtuoso. I am in such awe of this man. I am writing this review after the second listen of "Only." I have been a fan since 1992 with his album "Determination" and since then he has had a string of albums which are all diverse. This one is his first true solo acoustic effort, and the results are stunning. The production is fantastic, the guitar tones are just beautiful. When he performs pieces such as "Questions" and "Padre" they really capture the essence of his live work, which is breathtaking. Tommy is definitely one of the most incredible guitarists in the world and this album is pure art." John Delany from Australia.

Buena Vista Social Club

Ry Cooder, Buena Vista Social Club
An Amazon.com essential recording.
"Ry Cooder's name has helped bring attention to this session, but it's the veteran Cuban son musicians who make this album really special. Reminiscent of Ellington in its scope and sense of hushed romanticism, Buena Vista Social Club is that rare meld of quietude and intensity; while the players sound laid-back, they're putting forth very alive music, a reminder that aging doesn't mean taking to bed. Barbarito Torres's laoud solo on "El Cuarto de Tula" is both more blinding and more tasteful than any guitar showcase on any recent rock album; a quote from "Stormy Weather" and some very distinct parallels to Hawaiian styles remind us of why it's called "world music." Rickey Wright.
"This is the truth! I am involved with the promotion of the Buena Vista Social Club recording and was present in the studio in Havana. Having read the long list of excellent reviews from listeners, which are great, I feel I must point out something. Ry Cooder was brought in as producer and DID NOT discover any of the Cubans on the record. This heroic task was performed by Juan De Marcos González, ex-Sierra Maestra and the leader of the Afro-Cuban All Stars (their 1st album was recorded in the same session in Havana). He it was who knew of the forgotten Ibrahim Ferrer and Rubén González, names from his childhood in Cuba, and went to their houses to ask them to play. None of them were found in the street, none of them 'happened to turn up' and none were found by Ry Cooder. They were all ready in the studio when Ry arrived. What Ry did was a fantastic job of producing and then post-producing in California. The other person who fails to get the credit derserved is Nick Gold, head of World Circuit Records in London who devised the concept with Juan De Marcos González. Not such a romantic story for Cooder fans, but true!" The label, Promoter of BVSC in Europe.
"Full Of Life And Energy. "Buena Vista Social Club" is a collection of music done with true feeling, talent and spirit. Great music never gets too old and here is evidence the great music from Cuba is still vibrant today as it was 40 years ago. The film based on the group had a special message about how age doesn't matter in the area of the great artists. One of the musicians here is in his 90s and look at how alive and energetic and moving this music is! The vocals, the music, the lyrics are all rich and full of style. These are real musicians playing real music. Like Santana's "Supernatural," "Buena Vista Social Club" is more of an experience than just good music. Songs like "Chan Chan" are really deep and move you in a nice way, others like "Candela" just excite you with the energy and fun feeling of it all. I'm grateful to Ry Cooder for bringing back these incredible musicians who play some of the best Cuban music ever. The only reason other arists like Celia Cruz don't mention them that often is because they still live in their homeland, Cuba. But they deserve praise and more. Recently we remembered Tito Puente who was a great musician and recently passed away, but we should also appreciate those who really brought Latin music to life, the ones who really play it with spirit and feeling. "Buena Vista Social Club" is no less than a masterpiece." Alci Rengifo from El Paso, Texas
"Poetry and a Rare Gift: A Look into the Cuban Soul. After years of neglect, some of the greatest musicians of Cuban music were brought together by Ry Cooder and Juan de Marcos to create magic. This album is a rare treat to fans of Cuban music, specifically, and for fans of great music of all varieties. These songs, performed by by a variety of greats such as Ruben Gonzalez (one of the great son pianists: son is the name for the uniquely Cuban rhythm), Compay Segundo (who is currently 93), and Ibrahim Ferrer, are poetic in verse and hypnotic in rhythm. How can you listen to Chan Chan without feeling yourself floating along the avenues of Havana or the streets of Santa Clara. My mother, who like my father was born in Cuba (from Pinar de Rios, a town near Havana), had heard some of these great musicians many years ago in their youth. How wonderful that they are here again to give the world the beautiful music of Cuba. Please do your soul a favor and purchase this album. And don't stop there. Many of the band members have formed as the Afro-Cuban All Stars and there are also wonderful albums of Ibrahim Ferrer and Reuben Gonzalez. Absolutely perfect! Just sit back and sail away on the sounds of Reuben Gonzalez' piano in "Murmullo" (and yes, that is a Hawaiian riff in the song) or dance the night away with your loved one as you croon along with Ferrer in "Dos Gardenias" or marvel at Eliades Ochoa's guitar in El Cuarto de Tula." Andres R. Guevara from Denver, CO, USA.
"Nostalgic When I heard this album for the first time, I remembered my childhood and my grandparents listening Afro-Cuban music. My mother almost cried when we saw the movie, because she also remembered when she was a chlid. Maybe most of these exceptional musicians were unknown (or forgotten), but this music is simply eternal." Ricardo from Lima, Peru.
"A Cuban Masterpiece. I have no words to describe how brilliant this recording is. Buena Vista Social Club bring alive the music that has sustained Cuba as far back as the 1920s. Listening to the likes of Ibrahim Ferrer, Ruben Gonzalez, Eliades Ochoa, Compay Segundo and Omara Portuondo paint a picture of a vibrant and soulful Cuba from the not too distant past. Needless to say, all musicians on this album have such incredible talent, that it is difficult to believe that we've missed out on such a musical extravagance for over 50 years. I have not come across a singer that can deliver such heartfelt passion in their music like Ibrahim Ferrer (83) and Compay Segundo (93), but the person that moved me the most on this recording was the 77 year old pianist Ruben Gonzalez. You just have to listen to PUEBLO NUEVO and MURMULLO to realise this man's incredible talent. It is hard to believe that Ruben virtually had given up playing due to arthritis in his hands, and that he has no piano at home. It is amazing to think that none of the musicians received recognition at the height of their careers, and seeing their current living conditions is a humbling experience. Nonetheless, I am happy that they achieved fame at last. All songs on this album are masterpieces. This recording is worth ten times its price, and it is one of my most treasured CDs in my music collection. It is a nostalgic, yet brilliant piece of Cuba." "Fantastic piano, great percussions with fascinating vocals. Buena Vista Social Club is one of the greatest albums of Afro-Cuban Latin Jazz. Each of the musicians has performed their best. Ruben Gonzalez, Company Segundo, Orlando Lopez are really the living legends of Cuban sound. After this album, one should listen to `Introducing Ruben Gonzalez`(R. Gonzalez is 78 years old ...) The fascination of this album also depends on the recording, and the feelings during recording. It is a great album with great performance, and can be listened for years and years....." Riding with the King

by Eric Clapton and B.B. King
"It sounds like the beginning of a story: "So, Slowhand and the King of the Blues were riding in a car ..." If this is a musical journey, it's the kind that rolls down long, empty stretches of country highway at 80 miles an hour, with the top down and the stereo blasting. Clapton and King may be more city than country, but this collection has the relaxed, laid-back feel that only comes from a pair of veterans doing what they do best. What they do here is cover 12 classic blues songs, many of them staples of King's repertoire, so the title of this album makes sense. Whether it's the rollicking rock & roll of the title track, or the acoustic shuffle of "Key to the Highway," or the sweet notes of "When My Heart Beats Like a Hammer," a real sense of pleasure comes through on this album, the kind of pleasure one gets from jamming late at night with a good friend." Bjork
Tracks: Possibly Maybe - (Lucy Mix), Hyperballad - (Brodsky Quartet version), Enjoy - (Further Over The Edge mix), My Spine, I Miss You - (Dobie Rub Part One-Sunshine mix), Isobel - (Deodato mix), You've Been Flirting Again - (Flirt is a Promise mix), Cover Me - (Dillinja mix), Army Of Me - (Masseymix), Headphones - (0 remix), I Miss You - (Original mix).
"The Icelandic iconoclast is a past master of deconstructing her studio recordings, and here she plays an active role in helping a crew of remixers and guest artistes get medieval with tracks off 1995's Post. Trip-hop, jungle, and industrial flavors will draw the Tricky crowd, and Brodsky Quartet puts a string-driven spin on "Hyperballad," but it's the lush Deodata treatment of "Isobel" that'll make your head spin." Jeff Bateman.
...TELEGRAM is no slapdash effort; Bjork recorded new vocals for many of the songs and collaborated with a well-chosen array of artists from the avant-garde and electronic worlds..." Rolling Stone, 1/23/1997.
"...Ultimately, TELEGRAM isn't so much an admission that POST wasn't commercially viable as an attempt to make the album more of what it already is, letting the songs breathe in a slightly different way for those of us back here in the 20th century." Spin, 3/97.
"...It's a post-POST disc of inventive rethinking...Ambient and gutsy, Bjork's old-new product defines creative elasticity." Entertainment Weekly, 1/17/97.
"Half-good, half-... not-as-good. "Telegram" is a decidedly mixed bag: Buy it if you're a Bjork addict, but otherwise stick with "Post" (the album whose songs this CD remixes). Only one song here improves upon the original--the remix of "Hyberballad" replaces the drum beats and squeaky noises of the original with an inventive and haunting arrangement by the Brodsky Quartet that could stand on its own as an instrumental but goes even better with the lyrics, in part because it actually mimics the sounds of some of the events described in the song. The one new song here, "My Spine," is passionate and wonderful; it's minimalist (just three minutes of Bjork singing and Evelynne Glennie playing exhaust pipes) but complex, like the "Post" version of "Cover Me" or "All is Full of Love" from "Homogenic."
Two other remixes are very different from the originals but hold their own--"Possibly Maybe" and "Cover Me." The remixes of "Isobel" and "You've Been Flirting Again" don't sound much different from the originals--they more or less simplify these songs and bring out their prettier elements. The "Army of Me" and "Enjoy" remixes are attention-getting, industrial-sounding tracks that have almost nothing to do with the originals. "I Miss You" has a pretty, wistful, hip-hop background, but this setting is all wrong for the intensity of the song's lyrics and vocals. Finally, "Headphones" is a slow, boring, disgraceful mess.
Again, worth buying for a fan, but not necessarily otherwise." A music fan from Washington, D.C.
The ANTITHESIS of Mainstream ... eh heh heh. A true bjOrk release, this disc is the utter, joyful ANTITHESIS of mainstream music. It will be either total agonizing pain for the musically-brainwashed products of the media ... or pacifying ear-sugar for REAL humans with a love of real music. Actually, this release was a mixed bag for me, though all tracks are atleast decent. This is NOT a "best of" remix album; but, it features some of the Post-era mixes (which all have new music and vocal takes) also available on singles. Unlike "Post", the feeling with "Telegram" is generally more melancholy, angst-ridden, scary, or just plain spaced-out. [Even so, the few "irritating" songs are actually pretty soothing when you're feeling irritable (identification!)] To start with, The Lucy Mix of "Possibly Maybe" is scratchy, dragging, and scary with vague, fractured Bjork vocals coming in at different pitches simultaneously. Not my favorite ... but always very interesting and occasionally satisfying when I'm in the mood for such eerie things. (Best mix of this song: the Dallas Austin one!!!). The Brodskey Quartet version of "Hyper-ballad" is - well, what you'd expect: an orchestral rendition. It doesn't move much. (Best mix: "Subtle Abuse" by Outcast). Enjoy" - Outcast ---- very industrial!! It's very noisy and such; after hating it, I grew to love it very, very fast. Not many Bjork songs are this hard. Solid industrial mix of this surprisingly-seldom-mutated sharp techno song. "My Spine" is a little silly ditty created spontaneously in the studio by Bjork and Evelyn Glennie (on a xylophone of some perky nature). This fun song is Bjork at her "cutest" and quirkiest. It's also on Glennie's greatest hits CD [along with the rarer "Oxygen" featuring a more melancholy Bjork (reminiscent of her "Visur Vatnsenda-Rosu.")]. "I Miss You" Dobie Part 1 is a radio-friendly sort of hip-hop version. It's interesting to hear the spasmatic, ecstatic original be transformed into such a pop-friendly, meter-tempered song. Despite that restructuring, I still like it. :) Eumir Deodato's string arrangement for "Isobel" is fine; but, the original is much better and more powerful. They seem to have subtracted the mythical nature from the song quite a bit with this. "You've Been Flirting Again" is Bjork's very own self-created "Flirt Is a Promise" mix. I LOVE this version!! It's very spacey and beautiful!! It begins and ends with NEW vocals: "you're all I've ever wanted ..." repeated in a very whispery way. Bjork sounds like she's singing a celestial lullaby to you from the inside of a space helmet while floating next to some nearby planet. ;) tee-hee. It's a very pretty song. "Cover Me" mixed by Dillinja was certainly an acquired taste. I used to find the reeling drum-and-bass and other odd, whirling, snakey, and siren sounds a bit nerve-racking. Now it is a another remix favorite, although I definitely can't be in a really "off" mood to hear it or I might do something ... 'regretfully violent` ... (well, not REALLY ...) "Army of Me" Masseymix is filled with grinding, squeaky mechanical sounds I don't care for. Bjork's choral chant sounds like she's gurgling it!! But the music sounds TOO simple&testosterone-like for my tastes. I believe this was played during some athletic events in the UK?? "Headphones" is a very beautiful song on "Post" when you open up to it. I believe (as do several others) that the song was actually improved upon in the "0 mix" by Mika Vainio here. It is another beautiful ambient song. It sounds very sparkly. "Headphones - 0" is my favorite mixed track on this disc. Incidentally, I believe the enigmatic Icelandic background ramblings of bjOrk on the original track have, quite strangely, been removed from this version. (Use an MD recorder like I did and mix the best from both!!) "I Miss You" - original mix --- is on this disc?? Gee... well, then again, I have the IMPORT which does NOT feature that extra track. Even so, this is one of the best songs off of Post!!!! When you "get to know it", the heights of musical passion and ecstasy it reaches are --- quite alarming. All in all, this CD has some excellent tracks and some decent tracks for the well-seasoned Bjork fan." A music fan from the Detroit metro area.
"I was peaking, but it hasn't happened, yet. I enjoy this CD. I had not listened thoroughly to any of Bjork's CDs before this one. I have respected her vocal abilities on the songs I have heard, though. Even though these are remixes of previous work, I feel the album stands on its own quite well. These songs present a broad range of music, from ambient to dancehall. Some formats work better than others, even so, Bjork's virtuoso vocals vivify all environments. My favourite tracks are HEADPHONES, an excellent ambient composition in the tradition of Brian Eno, and I MISS YOU (album version) with it's future-as-past lyrics. I am impressed with Bork's phrasing and intonation which throws me a bit off balance. After listening to the songs several times, many of them lose their charm, even so, I am interested in this CD as a way of hearing Bjork apply herself to a wide range of styles. If you are interested in an eclectic mix of popular musical formats, or if you are interested in the splendid vocal ability of Bjork, this CD will be interesting to you." Katja R from Munchen, Germany.
"My Spine. If you've never bought a remix CD before now is your chance! Bjork, G-d's gift from Iceland, uses her unique voice and amazing melodies to make Telegram a huge success! She proves she can mix like no other! I'm not a huge fan of remix albums but I had to make an exception for this one. There's classical in Hyperballad, a hip-hop feel in the I Miss You mix, a jungle beat in Cover Me, and a new song with a tingling sensation My Spine. Telegram is yet another proof that Bjork puts her entire heart and emotion into her music." Wesley from Petersburg, WV USA.

"This Icelandic marvel is such an original that, even after four Sugarcubes albums and a brilliant solo Debut, she remains an acquired taste. "Army of Me" is a turbulent, darkling tune that's almost conventional next to the gloriously eclectic material that follows. Working with Tricky, Soul II Soul/U2 producer Nellee Hooper, and string arranger/one-hit wonder Deodato, Björk looses her helium-fueled voice and surreal wordplay on Gershwinesque pop (the adorable "It's Oh So Quiet"), ambient dub ("Possibly Maybe") and all kinds of fresh dance/pop hybrids ("Enjoy," "Hyper-Ballad," "I Miss You"). Too raw and adventurous for mass success, perhaps, but a more unique, engaging, oddly accessible artist just doesn't exist." Jeff Bateman.
"...POST comes up as victorious and gallant as any of her Viking forefathers. Chock-full of curious noises, mesmerizing vocals and musical surprises, POST provides a much-needed escape route from alternative rock's dull offerings of late..." Rolling Stone (6/29/95).
"...Bjork is a bit more controlled this time around, so when she does let loose with the PSYCHO screams...her extremes pack more impact....Whether her accompaniment is punk guitars, disco beats, jazz horns, or symphonic strings, Bjork always comes across as her own wacky and seductively weird creation." Spin (7/95).
"...the ex-Sugarcube finds a bizarre and irresistible connecting point between industrial-disco, ambient-trance, and catchy synth pop..." Entertainment Weekly (6/23/95).
"One of the greatest pieces of art. I love this album! Post is like a toy that you keep until you die. I can't put it in words how this album helps me get through the day. Starting with #1 Army of Me: Brilliant song with a nice beat. Now for the rest of the tracks: #2 Hyperballad: Listen to it with your eyes closed,it'll put you into another universe. #3:Modern Things: *gape* #4: It's oh so quiet: Extremely Funny very Dramatic. #5: Enjoy: Tricky and Bjork always do organic collaborations full of life, one of my favorites. #6: You've been flirting again: I loved this song before I heard the original whole thing ,enough said. #7: Isobel: Very Beautiful and full of genius imagination. #8: Possibly Maybe: AAH TROPICAL INFLUENCE I FEEL MY INTELLIGENCE BEGINS TO INCREASE WHEN I LISTEN TO THIS SONG! #9: I miss you: Dramatic and I listen to it when my creative cells begin to flow. #10: Cover Me: Genius! #11: HEADPHONES!: When I listen to this song as I doze off to sleep I awaken in a refreshing beauty..." Jacolby T. Satterwhite from Pluto.
"THIS ALBUM JUST HELPS ME GET THROUGH MY DAY! I've listened to it a 1000 times! It's like therapy, BUY IT! IT ISN'T JUST MUSIC YOU'RE LISTENING TO! it's some kind of Hypnotic force that manipulates the good part of your brain! Very Scary how I'm addicted Bjork's albums when I remember being little and finding her strange. Now I can't get enough of her. Well I'm out, by this album it's one of her best albums, sorry for the typos my keyboard is broken and my fingers hurt to much to make corrections. C-ya!"
"Bjork proves she's worth her salt. Artists who are worth their salt must grow. By that measure, Bjork is worth a lot of salt. She has yet to dissapoint me in that she refuses to stand still artistically. Yes, there is a definitive Bjork-ish-ness about her music, but I don't think she makes the mistake of making the same album over and over. Her 1995 CD, Post, is a nice followup to 1993's Debut. In this album, some of the seeds she planted in Debut begin to mature, as she drifts farther from the mainstream and her Sugarcubes roots. "Army of Me" I tired of rather quickly, but that's OK. It was the hit single after all, and typical of hits, it couldn't hold my attention long. Can't hold her responsible for that. "Possibly Maybe" on the other hand, which you've probably seen on MTV, I never tire of. There's a lot going on in that song, and the notes Bjork chooses are positively jazz inspired. But I think the thing that hooked me on Post (which was my introduction to Bjork, by the way, in 1997) was the pure emotion that comes across in her music, and in her voice. "Hyperballad" is the one that really gets to me. The lyrics outline the story of a woman who walks to the edge of a cliff every morning, throws junk off, and contemplates suicide as she watches the items fall and strike the rocks below. The reason she indicates for this bizarre behaviour is that after that rather dismal start to her day, there's nowhere to go but up. Dark? Certainly. Sappy? Perhaps. But for whatever reason, I was emotionally affected by that song. But no matter the subject of the lyrics, it is Bjork's delivery that really sells the emotion, and what ultimately affects me. It's just nice that Hyperballad had something more to it lyrically. There's plenty of good music on this one. There's the ethereal opening to "Isobel", which is orchestral and haunting in its beauty. I could listen to that minute and a half alone over and over (and I have). There's a Japanese quality to "Cover Me". This one was evidently recorded in a cave, apparently a result of an incident during recording the album when Bjork just decided to run out into the night in the middle of a recording session, sound men scrambling to drag some recording equipment out the door after her...you can even hear the bats in the background. Strange song, almost shades of Yoko Ono, but I love it. Nice, experimental stuff. Granted, Bjork's music is not for the closed minded or musically timid. And I know I'm not the typical consumer sample -- I'm an artist at a game company -- but I find all her albums very inspiring. I usually have one of them on while I work, and I find I'm more relaxed and creative for it. Bottom line, for creative people, or even just people who enjoy adventurous music that's a little out of the ordinary, Post won't disappoint." Steve Ogden from Spokane, WA, USA.
"It elevates me. I enjoy the music on this CD. Björk does some amazing and outrageous things with her voice, once again. IT's OH SO QUIET, a 1940's tune by Hanslang-Reisfeld, is a roller coaster of big band sound -- at once quiet then explosive. Björk displays interesting and unique perspective in her lyrics. HYPER-BALLAD is a complex statement of relationships. We live on a mountain / right at the top / there's a beautiful view / from the top of the mountain / every morning I walk towards the edge / and throw little things off / like / car-parts, bottles and cutlery / or whatever I find lying around / it's become a habit / a way / to start the day / I go through all this / before you wake up / so I can feel happier / to be safe up here with you / Not your standard girl-meets-boy pop sentiment. THE MODERN THINGS contains a perceptive insight on the role of gadgets. I am intriqued and challenged by the music on this CD. If you are interested in songs sung well which are extremely unique, this CD will interest you." Katja Rusu from München, Germany.
"My first time. This is my first Bjork album. What can I say after 90 other reviewers? Okay, reread the 'editors reviews', as they are exactly on target. I really enjoy 'Post', but I think that one Bjork album is enough (for me). Other reviewers have waxed rhapsodic, without really telling you what the music is like. The songs depend heavily on simple and unusual (but extremely clever) electronic themes, rather repetitious within one song, but very dissimilar between songs. The simplicity of the electronic themes is what highlights the nuances of Bjork's gifted and well trained singing voice. If you like the first track 'Army of Me', I think that you will like the rest of the album as well. Yes, I consider this album "accessable" (perhaps 'Post' is the best example of what 'accessable' means, the way music critics use the word)." "Wiley Fox" from Dhahran, Saudi Arabia.

Born

Bond
Composer: Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Magnus Fiennes, Yoad Nevo, et al.
Conductor: Julian Kershaw
Tracks: Quixote, Winter, Victory, Oceanic, Kismet, Korobushko, Alexander The Great, Duel, Bella Donna, The 1812, Dalalai, Hymn, Victory (Mike Batt Mix).
"Born, the debut album by four conservatory-trained young women, has little to do with classical music. It's a gimmick, fusing a string quartet of frivolous femmes, spicy girls who all want to be "Posh," with dance beats, a big production mixing their violins, viola, and cello with polished electronics. Taking themselves less than seriously--they played the James Bond theme at their Royal Albert Hall debut--pop "Victory" looks assured. This single bounces along with a dash of Rossini's Barber of Seville and a real sense of pop melodrama, in spirit little different from what guitarist John Williams did with his rather less photogenic band Sky in the late 1970s. What may surprise is that tracks such as the frenetic world-dance "Quixote" are penned by the film composer Magnus Fiennes, brother of the more famous Ralph and Joseph. "Winter" adds Jean Michel Jarre-style synth and voice-over to the ghost of Vivaldi and the infectious beat goes on, and on, and on. Sex sells, and Bond's success seems assured. This is a state-of-the-art product, but with a bonus remix of "Victory" by Mike Batt of Wombles fame, just don't expect it to be art." Gary S. Dalkin.
"New Beat for Classical. I bought this CD for my 10-year-old daughter who plays violin and idolizes female artists. She loves it so much that it has now replaced The Spice Girls, Britney Spears and even The Backstreet Boys as her favorite CD. I have to admit I like it as well. It gives a whole new beat to classical music, and makes it more appealing to the younger generations. I don't care as much for the techno-pop tracks, but Bella Donna, Hymn, and The 1812 are wonderful. I recommend this CD for all ages." A music fan from Madison, AL.
"Lots of fun and something different. So what that these conservatory-trained string players aren't doing classical violin quartettes. These gals are cute, fun to watch, and their music is entertaining. The "Victory" cut is energetic, maybe the best on the album. If you like techno, New Age or just something different in the electro-pop world, this is really great. I like it to clean the house by--energizing music puts me in a terrific mood." J. Daneman ("knitsnbytes") from Santa Fe, NM, USA.
"Just simply incredible. I finally received my copy of Bond's "Born" CD in the mail. It was definitely well worth the month long wait for this CD. I first heard of the group on CNN's World Beat program and was intrigued by what I heard. Just because the music is classical doesn't translate into boring, elevator music. I love the Mike Batt mix of "Victory", too bad it was only around 3 minutes long. I hope I hear more from this classical quartet. They could liven up the classical genre for years to come." Erica Anderson from Minneapolis, MN, USA.
"The Best. Someone recommended 'Victory' to me, and said it was a good song, then I got a few others, so I just went out and got the CD because the music is that good, especially one of my favorites 'Duel' I recommend this CD to anyone who is into New Age music, Classical, Techno, or World Music etc... Especially If you like Vanessa-Mae, you'll love these 4 wonderful musicians. BUY IT!!!" Kevin from Indianapolis, IN, USA.
"One of the best intrumentals I have listened to lately. I have been watching the "victory" video-clip for quite some time now but could not find the CD to buy it. In "Victory" the elements that made me love it was the melody and the vigorous tempo of the piece. Now that I have bought the CD I can say that all pieces are wonderfull. Especially the track #7, "Alexander the great" brings out the Greek spirit. In total I would say that this CD is one of the best I have heard lately." DOLOGLOU VALLI from Athens, Greece.
"Simply fun to listen to. I want to know why critics and reviewers are all worked up that Bond's "Born" CD isn't exactly classical. The Spice Girls on stringed instruments I don't think so. The girls in Bond actually had training and do actually have talent, unlike their sugary confectious counterparts who a) have no talent and b) no training in what they do which is singing. Sure the music isn't 100% classical but that is what makes this CD more interesting, the fact that it is more pop than classical. I love classical as much as the next person but sometimes it is just too dull at times. Bond really livens the whole classical genre by infusing it with pop and techno. I haven't stopped listening to this cd since I received it in the mail almost a month ago. This is one classical/pop cd I crank my stereo to listen to at home. "Belladonna" is a sweeping 3 1/2 minute epic scored by EOS, the second violinist in the group. Very dramatic and very emotional I think. A perfect song for any soundtrack. It is probably my very, very favorite track on the cd. "Victory" is my other favorite track. The Mike Batt remix is awesome, there is a more techno edge to that track than to the original track. "Duel" and "Winter" are my other two favorite tracks. Oh heck every song on this album are my favorite songs. Very enjoyable album that does not deserve the snobby criticisms from classical music lovers. Perhaps Bond doesn't deserve to be lumped in a genre that attracts music snobs." Track 16 (The Movie Soundtrack)

Billy Franks

As recommended by Ellen!
TRACK 16 is the soundtrack from the new independent thriller/murder mystery written and directed by Mick McCleery. It stars Billy Franks as Paul Matthews, a musician who records the sounds of a murder. Also features Bobbi Ashton, C Fox C, and Alan Pratt. All songs written and performed by Billy Franks.
"About the Artist: Billy Franks was the lead singer/songwriter for the Enlish band 'The Faith Brothers' who's 2 albums and 6 singles for Virgin Records all made the UK chart in the late 80's. They toured with U2, REM, PETE TOWNSEND, BOOMTOWN RATS, and THE ALARM. Since then he has released three solo CD's; 'Mass', 'Genuis & Grace' and the soundtrack for 'Track 16'. His fourth CD; 'Sex Laughter & Meditation' is being released on July 18th, 2001 by Hot Records.
"The music makes the movie. I thought the movie was pretty darned good, considering the micro-budget -- but the soundtrack is definitely a keeper. Billy Franks has got that honest, non-overproduced sound, and an enthusiasm that bleeds through the speakers. It's quickly become one of my favorite CDs." Nathan Shumate from Sunset, UT, USA.
"See the movie. Listen to the CD! I saw this movie in April at it's premiere at the old Harwan Theatre in Mt. Ephraim, NJ. Very cool, kept me guessing. Picked up the CD and it really rocks. Billy Franks is a real talent, as an actor and a singer/songwriter. From the sweet melody of 'Angel at Your Elbow' to the mysterious sounding 'Track 16' this CD has got it all. Certainly worth having." Gary Joseph from Haddon Heights, NJ. United States.

"TRACK 16 is DePalma’s BLOW OUT or Coppola’s THE CONVERSATION on a smaller, tighter, and ultimately more fulfilling scale." b-independent.com.
"A highly enjoyable, intriguing thriller..." flipsidemovies.com .
"Director Mick McCleery's Masterpiece. Not only was I stunned to see a Independent film with a good plot; It actually made sense! The writing was absolutley top notch for such an underground project. The characters of the story made this video come to life. With great performances by the entire cast. This was a movie everyone enjoyed making. It wasn't just "Work" for them, It was Passion. It payed off... The soundtrack painted the story with it's presence made it as vibrant as it could be. Thumbs up to Billy Franks for the music. Now the last thing I would like to take mention of is the surprise ending. I will honestly say it is one of the best movie endings I have ever seen. I was moved by the scripting and how it interacted eith the characters. No one could have made those words come any more clear. It was art, and it was cool art! In the end Track 16 was the best movie I have seen in a long time." Keith Egan from USA.
"A special place in my video collection! Track 16 is definitely one of the best films I have seen in a long time. The plot is just brilliant, I was on the edge of my seat nearly all the way through it, with it's spectacular twists in the story. The acting and special features was excellent and had definitely been thought out well and been directed well. Billy Franks plays the main character of Paul who is a very talented singer. He is trying to record his new song when there is a murder but who was the killer? This murder mystery keeps you in suspense, infact I had to watch it a couple of times to see if there was any clues. This film definitely has a special place in my movie collection. Infact it is the best film that I have seen that hasn't come out of Hollywood, though the plot is better than a lot of the big movies these days." Miss E P Stafford from Bath, England.

"Peru revisited. Looking for an album that will capture all the music you enjoyed while traveling through the country of Peru? This one fits the bill! It vividly brought back memories of the wandering pan flute, guitar and harp bands that strolled through the streets, played in the resterants and intertained us where ever we traveled. It's music is smooth, restful, yet there are pieces that bring back memories of colorful dancers. Of course, the famous pan flute piece, 'El Condor Pasa' appears on this tape, but it doesn't overwelm the much more cultural pieces of the area. A pleasant trip down memory lane, and a great side dish to a Peruvian fete of Empanadas and Pisco sours!" A music fan from Bakersfield, CA USA.

Duct Tape Book Two: Real Stories

by Jim Berg
Duct Tape Book Two features real hints from real people and, of course, commentary from the Duct Tape Guys along with famous duct tape quotes and photos from The Duct Tape Guys Tape the World--World Tour.
"It's our second book! OK, we lied. We said that our first book, "The Duct Tape Book" would be the ONLY Duct Tape Book you'll ever need. Well, that was before people started sending us their weird and wacky uses of duct tape. They were so good that we just had to share them with our public. So, THIS is the OTHER ONLY Duct Tape Book you will ever need. It also contains a photo essay of our Duct Tape Guys Tape the World, World Tour...in which we go around the world duct taping famous broken stuff. We think it's really two books in one. And, we think you'll love it (because a lot of you helped us write it)! Thanks for all of you who purchased our first book for the duct tape user in your life. Remember, their live's (and libraries) will not be complete until you purchase our second book for them. But remember, if you give them the book (or books), include a roll of duct tape with it - 'cause nothing says "I Love You" like a roll of duct tape! May the tape be with you!" The author[s], Jim and Tim, the duct tape guys.
"Even funnier than their first! The Duct Tape Guys have done it again. They have come up with even MORE uses for duct tape - and fully imbellished it with illustrations and photos this time. A world tour photo essay and fake ads make this a completely must-have for the duct tape lover." A reader from Wisconsin.

The Jumbo Duct Tape Book

by Jim Berg, Tim Nyberg, Tony Dierckins Did you know that duct tape can turn any item of clothing into rainwear? That duct tape over a computer screen will keep your kids from surfing naughty sites on the Web? That a perfect solution for those easy-to-lose TV remotes is to duct tape them to your arm? (Not only won't you lose it, you'll never have to relinquish control over it, either!) But can you also believe that Jim and Tim's creative ideas for duct tape spawned not just one bestselling book, but three, plus a calendar? And now the ultimate collection? With two-thirds of the material drawn from their previous books and calendars and one-third all-new, THE JUMBO DUCT TAPE BOOK is pure nuttiness to the nth degree. The premise is right there, on page one: "One rule can get you through life. It if ain't stuck and it's supposed to be, duct tape it." But of course it's the intrepretation that counts-like duct taping the gas pedal for cruise control, or duct taping marbles to your pressure points for instant reflexology. And then there's bending the rule-transforming sneakers into golf shoes by punching nails through duct tape and taping it to the soles, saving energy by taping all switches in the off position. Plus cosmetic dentistry (use white tape for the "The Mask" look, silver for the metal-mouth bad guy look), cell phone safety (tape phone to side of head while driving so hands stay on wheel), home decorating (use duct tape for easy drapery tie-backs). You can even convert the book to a "hard cover" by taping a piece of 1/4 inch sheet of plate steel to the front and back covers. It'll last for years!
"WOW! This is our fattest book ever!" Jim and Tim, The Duct Tape Guys.
Forget everything you may have read or heard about duct tape. Compiled from a lifetime's obsession, The Jumbo Duct Tape Book is a magnum opus of nuttiness. If you duct tape you hands to the front and back covers of this book, you'll find it almost impossible to put down!
"The best of their best and more! The Duct Tape Guys have honed their humor and have crafted a jumbo masterpiece in this, their fourth book about all of the real and wacky uses for duct tape. While most of these duct tape uses are just plain stupid (they admit this right on the back cover - "breathtakingly stupid"), they are absolutely, delightfully funny! You can give this book as a gift without fear of offending anyone. It's 450+ pages of original, highly creative duct tape FUN! Buy it! You'll LOVE it!" Sandra Rathberg from Shelton, CT.
"Hysterically funny. Hysterically funny and loaded with sage advice. This book is the perfect gift for any handy guy or girl, on your gift list. Loaded with unique tips on pet care, household repair, fashion and travel, this is the book for you. You will find yourself asking "why didn't I think of that". Ductigami : The Art of the Tape

by Joe Wilson
"The Glories of Ductigami. Ductigami is the best book about duct tape if not the best book ever written. I have made most the objects in the book. Each one worked very well. I feel like everybody should have a wallet made from duct tape. It will float when put in water too. After making some of the items the book shows you how to make I felt like making my own duct tape items. Also I have made some improvment to some of the things. So this is a great book and should be owned by everyone." A reader from Milwaukie, OR.
"Great. ...This is witty and very funny." Luanne Nordloh from Ohio.
"LOTS OF FUN -- QUACK QUACK. This book contains lots of fun projects using duct tape. If you're bored, this book will keep you busy. There are many useful projects that are creative and fun. I just made a wallet and it turned out GREAT! QUACK." Jon P. from California. "Duct tape stuff! Incredible! I'm ordering this book today because the author (Joe Wilson) is on KFI AM640 in Los Angeles with Debra Rich and is sharing the many uses of Duct Tape. Some amazing things he can do with this is make a duct tape wallet, cell phone holder, la-z-boy drink holder, etc... So, I consider it a must have. Joe has a great sense of humor and fortunately doesn't take this too seriously. I plan to make some of this stuff and give it out as gag gifts for Christmas this year." The Beatles 1

The Beatles
Tracks: Love Me Do, From Me to You, She Loves You, I Want to Hold Your Hand, Can't Buy Me Love, A Hard Day's Night, I Feel Fine, Eight Days a Week, Ticket to Ride, Help!, Yesterday, Day Tripper, We Can Work It Out, Paperback Writer, Yellow Submarine, Eleanor Rigby, Penny Lane, All You Need is Love, Hello Goodbye, Lady Madonna, Hey Jude, Get Back, The Ballad of John & Yoko, Something, Come Together, Let It Be, The Long and Winding Road.
"Proving yet again their willingness to dice 'n' slice their burgeoning legacy into new--if not exactly fresh--product, the Fab Four Minus One have released this single-disc compendium of their No. 1 hits..." Jerry McCulley.
"A child Of a Hippy Gets a Better Understanding. When I was a kid my parents would talk about The beatles and play the Beatles in our house..My mom especially..and my Dad for one birthday make a tape w/ some of the Beatles songs on it..I just thought good songs and catchy beats..But then after watching all this stuff about their anniversary..I bought this album and let me tell you its been stuck in my cd player ever since and I just love it..The songs are haunting..especially Yesterday, Eleanor Rigby, Come Together..If you know History or have been told how it was during that time..you have a better understanding of what power the beatles had and still have for all the people that are just learning about them..their songs are much more then catchy tunes and nice beats..but what that time was and how things changed..I love this cd and I appreciate the Beatles alot more then I did..I also have a better understanding for what my parents went through when they were my age. How lucky they were to see the world changed dramatically.." Carly from somewhere in VA.
"Great remastering of the hits. I have all the Beatles' albums on CD AND vinyl. And I've read several of the reviews here containing complaints about "1" not being the "true album experience" or folks saying "the original 'mono' format sounds better." Although the former criticism has merit, the latter criticism is, in my opinion, totally lacking merit. These songs sounds MUCH better remasterd on this new CD. For example, anyone who ever heard the original version of "Daytripper" knows that you could never hear the guitar and vocals together. It was always one or the other. "Daytripper" sounds GREAT on this CD. The remastered version of "Let it be," likewise, is terrific. It truly has the "church-like" quality that was intended. Yes, its true, if you want the Beatles' "album experience" you need to go buy Abbey Road or Sgt. Peppers and listen to it from start to finish, but "1" is a great CD with great remastering and stereo quality." Virginia Murray from Jefferson City, Missouri, United States.

Broadcasting From Home

Penguin Cafe Orchestra
Tracks: Music For A Found Harmonium, Prelude & Yodel, More Milk, Sheep Dip, White Mischief, In The Back Of A Taxi, Music By Numbers, Another One From The Colonies, Air, Heartwind, Isle Of View, Now Nothing
"Subtle and Enjoyable. Upon first listen, I almost foolishly dismissed Broadcasting from Home as a disappointing follow-up to their self-titled debut. What I later realized, however, was that Broadcasting simply wasn't as accessible and easy-to-please as the tracks on their first record (a good thing). In time this one has grown on me quite a bit. I won't say that I enjoy Broadcasting MORE than their first record; rather, I enjoy Broadcasting in a DIFFERENT way. Whereas I do feel that the first album is more consistent, I find Broadcasting more challening listenting; the songs are more subtle, more sombre. Yes, there is the one infinitely catchy track, In the Back of a Taxi, but the others take time to digest properly. My favorite is Now Nothing, a song so spare yet so beautiful that it's haunting. Fans of ambient/minimalist music should find this offering quite solid. Newbies to the genre might want to start off with the self-titled debut." David Sussman (Franzooey) from Athens, Ohio.
"Enchanting. Music to sit back and let yourself slide into the quaint soundscapes of another reality. What can you call it----English summer afternoons with tea, or a cafe on the continent, it's where the music takes you. Very relaxing for a quiet afternoon sofa safari." A music fan from Florida, USA.

Christgau's Consumer Guide : Albums of the 90s

by Robert Christgau
The Dean of American Rock Critics tackles the decade when music exploded. The '90s saw more albums produced and distributed than any other decade. It was a fertile era for new genres, from alt-rock to Afropop, hip hop to techno. Rock critic Robert Christgau's obsessive ear and authoritative pen have covered it all-over 3,800 albums graded and classified, from A+s to his celebrated turkeys and duds. A rich appendix section ensures that nothing's been left out-from "subjects for further research" to "everything rocks but nothing ever dies." CHRISTGAU'S CONSUMER GUIDE is essential reading and reference for any dedicated listener.
Robert Christgau has reviewed rock and popular music for over thirty years. He is a senior editor and chief music critic at the Village Voice, and writes for Playboy, Rolling Stone, Spin and other publications. CHRISTGAU'S CONSUMER GUIDE: Albums of the 90s is his third record guide. Christgau is also the author of ANY OLD WAY YOU CHOOSE IT: Rock and Other Pop Music, 1967-1973 and GROWN UP ALL WRONG: 75 Great rock and Pop Artists from Vaudeville to Techno.
"In praise of shorter reviews. This book claims "over 3800 reviews", but that's more like a sample size. That's far from exhaustive, but no doubt exhausting work for any single reviewer: more than a new record a day, every day for ten years. (For what it's worth, I have a web site where I've rated some 3000 records from the same decade, including many reissues, and it's taken me 8-10 hours/day listening time to accumulate that -- without writing reviews. Much more is hard for me to imagine.) Sure, most are quickly disposed of with icons for Bombs, Neither (good nor bad), short lists of Choice Cuts, or cryptic Honorable Mentions, but in most cases that's information enough. That leaves us with about 1100 single paragraph reviews: mostly "A List" records, with a smattering of Turkeys for balance, perspective, and blowing off a little steam. I don't care much for the Turkeys, but I suppose it's good to know that Christgau actually thought about the likes of Michael Bolton, MC Ren, and the Verve Pipe before sloughing them off. But once you sort through the data, what's left is the broadest and most erudite survey of popular music in our time. Christgau eschews categories since he transcends them: his picks range from Al Jolson to Spring Heel Jack, Sleater-Kinney to Mzwakhe Mbuli, Ruby Braff to Prince Paul, Freedy Johnston to Liliput, Tricky to Garth Brooks. The writing is denser than in previous Consumer Guides: partly the accumulated weight of his experience, partly a bias for the analytical over the informative, and possibly a reaction to the bloat in the music he critiques. This can be difficult, and can send you scurrying off to other guides for background. And by limiting the scope to an arbitrary decade, it lacks context. But these days almost all record guides are tepid committee works, usually locked into a single limiting genre. By contrast, this book offers us a single, coherent critical viewpoint, often brilliant, applied to an impressively broad musical spectrum. This book is unique, and we're fortunate to have it." Thomas Hull from Wichita, KS, USA.

Any Old Way You Choose It

by Robert Christgau
Covers 1967 to 1973. JVB
Many believe Robert Christgau invented rock criticism. Cooper Square Press offers an expanded edition of his early writings, unavailable since 1978. It was one of the first books on rock music, an invaluable compendium showcasing a new sub-genre of writing not yet contained by the established boundaries of journalism or criticism. Christgau deftly applies his intellectual approach to popular music, showing that it is as worthy of serious study as any other art form. Yet his writing is never pretentious, as he presents early record reviews, discusses music as it relates to popular culture, and profiles artists as diverse as Frank Zappa, Carole King, Captain Beefheart, Tom Jones, and Chuck Berry.

The Great Rock Discography: Complete Discographies

Listing every track recorded by more than 1,000 groups

by Martin Strong and John Peel
It took Strong 10 years to compile this discography, and the rock music world is in his debt. More accurate and comprehensive than other books attempting to accomplish the same ends, more readable and better organized, The Great Rock Discography title may toot its own horn, while Strong calls his opus "the ultimate rock book of all time," but it's entirely merited. It starts at A with ABBA and spends over a page on them (and these are rather large pages, with very small print), describing the history of the band and their albums, then compulsively listing their every recorded musical output from October '73 until October '96, including a jungle of code notations (you can refer back to the formats-and-abbreviations page whenever needed) with catalog number and recording label, whether the A- or B-sides differ in their U.K. and U.S. versions, which are essential to your collection, and whether the vinyl was a long player, a double-long player, a colored long player, or a mini-long player. Covering Adam & the Ants, Bootsy's Rubber Band, Tom Petty, Linda Rondstadt, and Muddy Waters on up through the Zombies and ZZ Top, Strong lists every track by more than 1,000 groups." Stephanie Gold.

Little Voice: Music From The Miramax Motion Picture

Jane Horrocks, Various Artists
Tracks: That's Entertainment - Judy Garland, Man That Got Away, The - Judy Garland, Lover Man - Billie Holliday, I Want To Be Loved By You - Jane Horrocks, It's Not Unusual - Tom Jones, Big Spender - Shirley Bassey, My Heart Belongs To Daddy - Marilyn Monroe, Come Rain Or Come Shine - Judy Garland, Goldfinger - Shirley Bassey, Get Happy - Jane Horrocks, There's No Business Like Show Business - Ethel Merman.
"Really Great, but...... I'd have to go with the fact that this is a great soundtrack, but with two flaws: one great, one small. The glaring omission of Jane Horrocks' singing more of the tunes is unforgiveable. She did SUCH a great job in the film. (I mean, was she robbed of an Oscar nom or what?) And while there's nothing wrong with Judy, Ethel and Shirley, the fascinating thing about the film was that Jane did do her own singing. There should be more of it on the CD. The small flaw: That Tom Jones song. I mean really! It just doesn't belong there." A music fan from The Castro, SF, CA.

Tracks:Why Didn't You Call Me, Do Something, Caligula, I Try, Sexomatic, I Can't Wait To Meetchu, Still, I've Committed Murder, A Moment To Myself, The Letter.
Amazon.com's Best of 1999. "Gray starts from a solid foundation of retro funk and soul and builds on it by adding hip-hop signifiers and modern studio techniques. The result is one of the better debuts of the year, thanks to Gray's blunt proclamations ("I've committed murder... and I don't feel bad about it") and inimitable vocal phrasing. On How Life Is offers the sass of a '20s blueswoman plus the don't-mess-with-me strength of a 21st-century R&B icon-in-the-making." Keith Moerer .
