BIGGLES

You don't often see many statues of dogs and few of them feature
Miniature Schnauzers. In fact the only one that I know of is a statue
of a Watchman and his dog (recognizable as a Schnauzer) in the
marketplace in Mecklenberg, Germany.
Now Sydney's first ever statue in memory of a dog has been unveiled by the
Hon. Robert Webster MLC, the NSW Minister for Planning and Housing.
The statue stands proudly outside the house in which Biggles' owner,
Trevor Kelly lives on the corner of Atherden and Playfair Streets in the Rocks.
Biggles was well known in the area as a daredevil pillion rider on Trevor's
motorbike, riding behind him in a milk crate. He was regarded as a
'local character' among the residents and shopkeepers as he roamed the
Rocks Area sometimes leaping from balconies in pursuit of cats.
Unfortunately for Biggles, his final leap was off a cliff near Mrs Macquarie's
Chair after what was thought to have been a rat. Biggles died at the age of
fourteen and is now immortalised in the statue created by artist, Anne Dybka,
herself a resident of the Rocks.
The statue was commissioned by the Sydney Cove Authority and The Rocks Chamber
of Commerce and supported by local residents so that Biggles will remain a
fond memory to those who knew him.
